In recent years, Hoa Binh people have promoted the exploitation of potential and advantages to grow and process medicinal plants, helping to increase income and contribute to the socio-economic development of the locality.

Stable income from growing medicinal plants

With a natural area of 4.6 thousand km2 and a typical climate of the tropical monsoon region, Hoa Binh has quite favorable conditions for growing medicinal plants. Especially the potential to form concentrated medicinal plant production areas and to preserve, exploit and develop valuable, rare natural medicinal plants.

Dong Chua Hamlet, now Group 9, Thong Nhat Ward, Hoa Binh City, is home to nearly 200 Dao ethnic households. For many years, the people here have grown medicinal plants; preserved and developed the traditional Vietnamese medicine profession. Currently, there are about 100 households in Group 9 practicing Vietnamese medicine.

In 2020, the Dao Hoa Binh Traditional Medicine Cooperative in Thong Nhat Ward was established. Up to now, the Cooperative has been operating effectively, providing the market with many valuable medicinal recipes.

Mr. Ban Sinh Luong, Group 9, Thong Nhat Ward shared: "Thanks to making traditional medicine, many households in the group have a stable income. In addition to traditional traditional medicine products, the cooperative invests in machinery and extracts products suitable for market needs."

Similarly, Mr. Bui Viet Hung in Group 6, Tan Hoa Ward, Hoa Binh City has successfully built a model of growing, extracting and refining products for hygiene and health care from natural medicinal plants. From selling medicinal products he makes, his family earns over 500 million VND each year after deducting expenses.

Not only generating income for himself, Mr. Hung has also instructed 12 local households on techniques for caring for and propagating medicinal plants. At the same time, he has guaranteed output for the households, thereby helping them have a stable source of income.

In addition, Mr. Hung creates jobs for local people with a stable income of 6 million VND/month for 5-8 regular workers and 4-6 seasonal workers with a wage of 200,000 VND/worker/day.

Mr. Bui Viet Hung said: With the support of all levels, sectors, and specialized units of the city, I continue to improve the quality, design, and packaging of products to aim for OCOP star status. In 2022, my products will be recognized as 3-star OCOP at the provincial level, trusted and supported by many customers.

"In order for people to trust my products, I constantly research, learn and improve techniques to produce good quality products at low prices, with increasingly beautiful and eye-catching designs. In particular, the products produced must be tested and certified for quality by competent authorities," Mr. Hung confided.

Potential for medicinal plant development on Muong land

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, Hoa Binh province currently has over 2,300 hectares of medicinal and aromatic plants planted and exploited annually. Plants with large areas and yields include: 1,600 hectares of lemongrass, 379 hectares of Solanum procumbens, and more than 288 hectares of black xạ. In addition, there are other plants such as: red turmeric, yellow turmeric, mugwort, Gynostemma pentaphyllum, Codonopsis pilosula, Basil, Polyscias fruticosa, Cat's claw, and Gipaya with an area of less than 50 hectares. Medicinal plants are also grown under the forest canopy with an area of about 65 hectares.

Implementing Decision No. 1893/QD-TTg, dated December 25, 2019 of the Prime Minister (on the Program for developing traditional medicine and pharmacy, combining traditional medicine and pharmacy with modern medicine and pharmacy until 2030), has created new developments in the development of medicinal plants in localities in the province. In particular, in implementing the One Commune One Product (OCOP) program, medicinal plants are a group of products with very good development potential. In particular, a number of cooperatives have produced OCOP products with 3 to 4 star certification, typically: Yen Thuy Solanum procumbens extract of Bao Hieu Agricultural and Forestry Cooperative, Black-bone extract of Yen Tri Agricultural Cooperative (Yen Thuy district), Black-bone extract and Solanum procumbens extract of Tuyet Nhi Cooperative (Luong Son district), An Phe Trieu Gia of Trieu Gia Traditional Medicine Cooperative (Kim Boi), An Phuc Khop of H20 Vietnam Cooperative or lemongrass essential oil products of Thong Nhat Dao Ethnic Medicine Cooperative (Hoa Binh city).

According to the assessment of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, although there is a specific plan for each locality, in the production process, the scale of medicinal plant area is still greatly affected by market demand. In addition, searching and exploiting in traditional ways is still popular in localities, while the number of medicinal plants in nature is increasingly depleted. In order to effectively develop medicinal plants, Hoa Binh province has proposed key solutions. In particular, focusing on reviewing and clearly defining medicinal plant growing areas according to soil and climate conditions of each locality. Encouraging the development of medicinal plant growing models under forest canopy to protect forest resources and develop sustainable economy.

Promote cooperation between people, cooperatives and enterprises to form a sustainable medicinal value chain. Encourage contracts for product consumption, limit spontaneous and fragmented production. Support production facilities to invest in modern processing technology, ensuring products meet food hygiene and safety standards and are eligible for export. Further promote activities to promote Hoa Binh medicinal products. Develop preferential policies to support enterprises to invest in high-tech production and processing of medicinal materials.
