Unlike regular parent-teacher meetings, a homeroom teacher in Ho Chi Minh City creatively organized parent-teacher meetings to send meaningful messages to parents and relatives of students.
Students are the main characters in parent-teacher conferences.
On the afternoon of January 20, the parent meeting to review the first semester of the 2024-2025 school year at class 5T1, Tran Hung Dao Primary School, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, took place 30 minutes earlier than usual. Ms. Nguyen Dieu Ly, the homeroom teacher, and her students came up with ideas and organized a more creative parent meeting, eliminating the heavy pressure on students' grades and competition. Instead, this is an opportunity for students to show their parents the abilities, qualities, and skills they have trained throughout their time at school.
The classroom space was decorated and arranged by the students themselves. More than 30 students of the class were present. They were the main characters when they invited their parents into the classroom, guided their parents to participate in the classroom activities, performed arts, hosted the program...
At the connection corner, materials are ready, parents and students make bracelets. At the art corner, students will sit and watch their parents and draw portraits. Besides, there is also a culinary corner. Students make drinks such as peach tea, milk tea, coffee... to invite their parents.
After that, the students invited their parents to take a "check-in" photo with cute messages designed by the students such as "Don't be angry when looking at your scores", "Don't care about your scores, just have a peaceful Tet".
The students also performed a modern dance that they choreographed and practiced themselves. Two students in the class acted as MCs, introducing the program and honoring the outstanding students of the class in the first semester in various aspects...
Finally, the homeroom teacher discussed with parents about the students' learning and training in semester 1 and the direction and goals that students need to strive for in semester 2.
Parents meeting: Hope parents don't put pressure on grades
The parent-teacher meeting lasted for more than an hour and left many emotions for more than 30 parents. Many shared that this was the first time they attended a parent-teacher meeting for their children and it was like an intimate, warm party. Parents were happy about their children's confidence and creativity.
Notably, in the classroom space there is also a handwritten thank you letter from the students, sending a message to their parents: "Thank you, parents, for trusting and supporting us. Surely you have had beautiful memories here. Wishing you a happy Tet holiday with your family...".
Ms. Nguyen Dieu Ly, homeroom teacher of class 5T1, said that she had been nurturing the idea of a parent-teacher meeting like this for a long time. "Since I mentioned the idea, the students in the class have been very excited to prepare with me. They even kept it a secret from their parents until the last minute, so that the parent-teacher meeting would have many special emotions," Ms. Dieu Ly said.
The homeroom teacher of class 5T1 expressed that through this way of organizing a parent-teacher meeting, she sent gentle messages to the students' relatives.
"I want parents to understand that learning knowledge from textbooks is also very important, but test scores are not everything. Maybe in the first semester test, your child's scores were not as expected, but I still hope that parents will be proud of what you have tried. Because besides knowledge from lessons, children also develop soft skills, confidence, courage, creativity, presentation skills, teamwork skills, solidarity with the collective, which is comprehensive development in line with the goals of the 2018 General Education Program. With these qualities and abilities, children can confidently study in any environment," Ms. Dieu Ly confided.
Students MC at parent-teacher meeting
Ms. Le Thanh Huong, Principal of Tran Hung Dao Primary School, said that the school always emphasizes the importance of maintaining communication between parents and teachers to ensure the comprehensive development of students. Up to now, many classes have innovated the form of organizing parent-teacher meetings. For example, at the beginning of the meeting, teachers invite parents to write messages to their children; or send parents letters written by their children; parents participate in games at the beginning of the session with content related to their children's studies... Therefore, creative parent meetings like in class 5T1 are encouraged.
"A cheerful and open atmosphere will help the students' relatives feel excited when attending parent-teacher meetings for their children," said Ms. Thanh Huong. At the same time, according to Ms. Thanh Huong, this creates an opportunity for teachers to share advantages, difficulties and good solutions with parents. In particular, this is an opportunity for parents to better understand the 2018 General Education Program, understand more about the skills, creativity, maturity and efforts of their children...
