In September 2025, OpenAI, a company with a major investment from Microsoft, introduced its o1-series of artificial intelligence (AI) models, which are designed to spend more time thinking before responding. These models are capable of reasoning through complex tasks and solving more difficult problems than other leading AI models in the fields of science, programming, and mathematics.
Microsoft helps Copilot become more and more attractive to users
Then in October, Microsoft launched a new Copilot feature called Think Deeper for Pro users, which uses OpenAI's o1 reasoning models to help users solve complex problems.
Earlier this year, Microsoft decided to make Think Deeper free for all Copilot users, albeit with initial usage limits. The feature prioritized providing in-depth, step-by-step solutions to complex queries, which resulted in longer response times than typical Copilot interactions. Due to positive user feedback, Microsoft lifted these limits, allowing unlimited access to OpenAI’s reasoning models.
Microsoft Makes Copilot a Free Path to ChatGPT Pro
OpenAI recently introduced the o3-mini, their latest and most cost-effective version. With intelligence comparable to the o1 model, the o3-mini offers faster performance and improved efficiency. OpenAI offers the o3-mini model for free to ChatGPT users at medium settings, while ChatGPT paid plan users can select the o3-mini-high from the model selector. In particular, ChatGPT Pro subscribers ($200/month) will enjoy unlimited access to both the o3-mini and o3-mini-high models.
Copilot's Think Deeper is now the cheapest way to get to o3-mini-high
Now, Microsoft has announced an upgrade to Think Deeper, now powered by OpenAI’s latest o3-mini-high model. This means Microsoft is opening up access to a reasoning model that’s comparable to ChatGPT Pro’s capabilities to all Copilot users, but for free.
Microsoft's move is aimed at expanding access to its powerful AI reasoning tools to a wider audience. However, even with free access to advanced AI models, Copilot still faces challenges in attracting users compared to ChatGPT, which has forced the company to launch various promotional campaigns, including within Bing.
