Typically, bananas can last anywhere from two to six days after purchase. However, once bananas reach peak ripeness, they can start turning brown almost immediately, according to the New York Post.

The good news is that there are some tips to keep bananas from spoiling.

First of all, there are some things to keep in mind when storing bananas.

Bananas are one of the most perishable fruits, especially in hot conditions.

  • Keep out of direct sunlight. Heat will cause bananas to ripen faster.
  • Stay away from apples and pears. These fruits also release ethylene gas (a gas that fruits release to ripen themselves) which can also cause bananas to ripen faster.
  • Store in a well-ventilated area. Avoid placing bananas in closed spaces as this will retain ethylene gas which will speed up the ripening process.

Here, experts share how to keep bananas fresh longer.

Wrap the banana stem with plastic wrap or foil.

Gary Ellis, director of CE Safety Limited, a British health and safety organization, shares: Use cling film, plastic wrap or a piece of thick aluminum foil to wrap tightly around the stem of each banana. You can cut it off or leave it whole. However, it is best to cut and wrap each stem separately.

This can slow down the ripening process and keep bananas fresh for an additional 3 to 5 days compared to leaving them naturally, according to the New York Post.

Using plastic wrap, nylon or a piece of thick foil wrapped tightly around the stem of each banana can preserve bananas for 3 - 5 more days.

This will keep the bananas fresher for longer, he explains, because ethylene gas is released from the stem of the banana. Higher concentrations of this gas cause the banana to soften and turn brown faster. Therefore, blocking the release of ethylene gas will slow down the ripening process.

Store bananas in the refrigerator

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) says bananas can be stored in the refrigerator, but only after they have reached the desired level of ripeness.

Dr. Tamika Sims, food safety & preservation expert, senior director of food technology communications at the International Food Information Council of the United States, said: This method can preserve ripe bananas for 5-7 more days, according to the New York Post.

Putting bananas in the refrigerator too soon can spoil them and cause "frost burn", which stops the ripening process and leaves the bananas with a bitter taste.

Drape

In addition to the above two methods, hanging bananas instead of placing them in a basket also helps slow down the activity of ethylene gas and reduces the risk of bananas being bruised.

Try putting bananas in a glass jar in the refrigerator.

In addition, American food preservation expert Cross Amy, in a post on her Instagram page, shared a strange tip that she guarantees will keep bananas "fresh for up to 26 days longer".

How to do it: Cut the banana into three pieces, leave the skin on and put it in a glass jar in the refrigerator.

She said that after 26 days, the banana slices still looked fresh and the skin remained yellow, not brown. Try it to see what interesting things happen, according to Express .
