In a document signed by General Secretary Nguyen Manh Hung on January 23, the Vietnam Athletics Federation recognized Nguyen Thanh for breaking the national record with 2 hours 18 minutes 43 seconds at the Hong Kong Marathon on January 21.

The Hong Kong Marathon 2024 is recognized by World Athletics as the Asian Marathon Championship. Nguyen Thanh participated in this tournament as an athlete sent by the Vietnam Athletics Federation.
The Hong Kong Marathon course has also been measured by World Athletics and is classified as a Gold Label Road Race - the world's top road race group. Runners in the Hong Kong Marathon can use their results to qualify for the Olympic qualification - 2 hours 8 minutes 10 seconds for men, and 2 hours 26 minutes 50 seconds for women.
Before going to Hong Kong to compete, Nguyen Thanh's personal record was 2 hours 25 minutes 07 seconds when he won the SEA Games 31 marathon gold medal in My Dinh, Hanoi in 2022.
Nguyen Thanh is an athlete from Binh Phuoc and has been Vietnam's leading long-distance runner for about nine years. He first became famous when he won a bronze medal in the marathon at the 2015 SEA Games in Singapore in his first time attending the event.
After that, the injury made this athlete think of retiring. At the end of 2017, Nguyen Thanh asked to leave the Binh Phuoc athletics team to return home to learn a trade, then work for a garment company.
Returning to the track in 2019, Nguyen Thanh has continued to shine. This runner has won the national marathon championship for four consecutive years from 2020 to 2023. Nguyen Thanh also became the first Vietnamese athlete in history to win a gold medal in the SEA Games marathon with a victory at home stadium My Dinh in 2022.
Before leaving for the Hong Kong Marathon on January 21, Nguyen Thanh also set a national record for the half marathon on January 1. At that time, he won the Hanoi International Half Marathon with a time of 1 hour 6 minutes 39 seconds, breaking the old record - 1 hour 7 minutes 99 seconds - of his teammate on the national athletics team Do Quoc Luat.
