"Kruger Shalati - The Train On The Bridge" is a luxury hotel located in the town of Skukuza, eastern South Africa. It is located in Kruger National Park, one of the largest wildlife reserves in Africa.
The Kruger Shalati Hotel impresses visitors because it was originally an abandoned train, located on a 130-year-old suspension bridge over the Sabie River. This place was renovated and officially opened to welcome guests at the end of 2020.
Jerry Mabena, CEO of Motsamayi Tourism Group, said the hotel was inspired by the train service that passed through Kruger National Park a century ago and the railway line that crossed the suspension bridge called Selati.
In the 1920s, a steam train ran along this railway line, mainly serving tourists visiting the Kruger National Park. In 1970, a new railway line was built on the edge of the Kruger Reserve, causing the Selati line to cease operations.
In 2016, the idea of turning the steam train on the suspension bridge into a resort was put forward, with the aim of bringing the century-old bridge back to its former glory.
The old train carriages have been converted into 24 modern hotel suites, with balconies and swimming pools overlooking the Sabie River. From the balcony, guests can observe the whole view of Kruger National Park with wild animals such as lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants...
“This is the place for tourists who love wildlife, but don't want to get too close to them,” says Mabena.
Kruger National Park allows visitors to drive around on their own. If you are inexperienced, you can book an adventure tour organized by the resort. The tour is guided by a local who is familiar with the geography of the reserve.
“If you go with a guide, they know what they are doing, they know where each animal lives and what their hours are,” said local guide Thuli Mnisi.
The hotel has a room rate of about 530 USD (about 13.2 million VND) / person / night, applicable to international guests. The price includes meals, some drinks, two adventure tours, airport transfers and spa services.
Long-term stays will be discounted. The hotel also has rooms outside the train station at lower rates.
