Foreign Minister Zambry Abdul Kadir arrived in New Delhi and co-chaired the 6th India-Malaysia Joint Commission Meeting (JCM) with his Indian counterpart S. Jaishankar on November 8.

During his first visit to India as Foreign Minister, Zambry Abdul Kadir said Malaysia and India are exploring “more areas of cooperation and collaboration for the present and the future”. The two sides discussed new areas of cooperation such as digital, financial technology and semiconductors.

Malaysia, like other ASEAN members, wants to ensure the Indo-Pacific remains a “region of peace, prosperity and neutrality,” free of major power disputes. “We do not want this region to become a flashpoint for superpowers to clash with each other,” Zambry Abdul Kadir said.

Discussing the Israel-Hamas conflict, the head of the Malaysian Foreign Ministry highlighted India's role in efforts to implement a ceasefire in Gaza, where the ongoing conflict has left more than 10,000 people dead and 26,000 others injured.

Describing India as a country with an “impressive foreign policy” and respect, Zambry Abdul Kadir asserted: “Countries like India and Malaysia have a responsibility to play their role in calling for an end to hostilities. And we will do our best to call for immediate humanitarian aid.”

For his part, the host country's Foreign Minister said that the JCM plays a very important role in assessing bilateral relations.

Emphasizing that Malaysia is today a very important strategic partner of India, Mr. S. Jaishankar said that the two sides reviewed the progress in cooperation in defense, security, trade, health, energy, education, tourism and people-to-people exchanges and regional issues in the Indo-Pacific, ASEAN, West Asia and other regional and global issues.

He added that the Indian side always appreciates Malaysia's support in building India's relationship with ASEAN.

The two Ministers witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between media conglomerate Prasar Bharti and Radio Television Malaysia (RTM), and another agreement between the Sushma Swaraj Institute of Diplomacy and the Malaysian Institute of Diplomacy and External Relations on cooperation in training diplomats.
