US approves sale of F-16 fighter jets worth $5.58 billion to Philippines

The US State Department said the sale would help the Philippine Air Force "improve its ability to suppress enemy air defenses."

The Trump administration has focused on shifting US military efforts to Asia, while reducing engagement in Europe.

During a recent visit to Manila, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth pledged to “re-establish deterrence in the Indo-Pacific region” against “threats”.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in a recent speech also reaffirmed the US defense commitment to the Philippines.

The US sale of F-16 fighter jets to the Philippines is likely to further heighten tensions in the region, as China remains wary of the military presence of the US and its allies near disputed areas.
