On April 1, the World & Vietnam Newspaper Party Cell organized a thematic meeting with the theme "Application of AI in journalism".
The program was attended by all Party members and employees of the Newspaper, along with guests from the Party Cell of the Press and Information Department, a number of Party Cells of the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese, the Party Cell of the National Border Committee, and the Party Cell of the Diplomatic Academy.
In his opening speech, Mr. Nguyen Truong Son, Party Cell Secretary and Editor-in-Chief of The World and Vietnam Newspaper, said that in the context of digital transformation, AI is gradually becoming an important tool to help journalists optimize the news production process, improve content quality and enhance the reader experience. However, the level of AI application in press agencies, including The World and Vietnam Newspaper, is still limited. Partly due to the rapid development of AI, partly due to the "reservation" mentality due to not really understanding what AI can bring to the job.
The program's speaker, Mr. Vu The Cuong, Lecturer of the Academy of Journalism and Communication, gave an in-depth presentation on the outstanding applications of AI in journalism. According to Lecturer Vu The Cuong, the application of AI not only helps save time but also supports data analysis, automates the news production process and personalizes content according to readers' needs.
Some typical AI applications in the field of journalism include: Automatic content generation - AI can produce financial, sports or weather news based on available data; Data analysis and trend prediction - AI helps journalists identify hot topics and news trends on social networks; Support information verification - AI can detect fake news, analyze news sources and verify images and videos; Content personalization - News platforms use AI to recommend articles based on user preferences...

However, the speaker emphasized that AI cannot replace the role of journalists in analyzing, evaluating and providing in-depth perspectives. “AI can help reporters collect and process information faster, but it is the reporters who decide how to report, ensuring the objectivity and accuracy of the information,” Mr. Vu The Cuong affirmed.
At the seminar, delegates had many questions and actively exchanged opinions with the speaker about the role, benefits and challenges of AI in the field of journalism.
In his sharing, lecturer Vu The Cuong emphasized that AI is changing the way news is produced, helping to optimize the journalist's workflow. AI tools can support data collection, analysis, information verification, and even automatically write some basic content. However, this application cannot completely replace the analytical thinking, professional ethics, and creative perspective of journalists.
Therefore, AI also has many potential risks, especially the risk of creating false information. "One of the biggest risks when using AI in journalism is the possibility of fabricating information or making false inferences," said Dr. Vu The Cuong.
AI can create fake events, combining disparate pieces of information to make the story seem more complete; make inaccurate inferences, when there is not enough data, AI can "make up" more information to create coherence, but lead to errors; create fake quotes, attribute statements to people who never said it, causing serious misunderstandings...
Dr. Vu The Cuong especially emphasized the phenomenon of “AI illusion”, which is when AI creates false information but presents it fluently and seems trustworthy. This is especially dangerous in journalism.
Besides the obvious benefits, AI also poses many challenges for journalism, especially in terms of professional ethics, information security and the risk of over-reliance on technology, Dr. Vu The Cuong especially emphasized. (Photo: Quang Hoa) |
To effectively utilize AI in journalism without falling into the trap of misinformation, strict controls are needed. The speaker said that journalists must still be the final verifiers, not completely relying on AI to collect and edit news. The use of AI must be controlled, combined with a process of cross-checking information from official sources; Building ethical standards when using AI in journalism, avoiding the abuse of technology while forgetting the core values of journalism.
Although AI brings many benefits, journalism cannot leave it to technology alone and still needs human analysis, evaluation and verification. Combining technology and professional ethics will help journalism maintain accuracy and objectivity in the digital age, Dr. Vu The Cuong emphasized.
In his closing remarks, Party Cell Secretary Nguyen Truong Son thanked the speakers for their presentations and the audience's enthusiastic participation and discussion; and emphasized that the seminar provided practical perspectives on the current trend of applying AI in journalism. The delegates all appreciated the role of AI in supporting news production, while becoming more aware of the challenges posed by this technology.
The topic is also an opportunity for the staff, reporters, and editors of The World and Vietnam Newspaper to approach new technologies, thereby finding effective AI application solutions while still maintaining the core values of journalism in the digital age.
