The Lao New Year is called Bunpimay and takes place from April 13-15 every year, also known as the “Wrist-tying” Festival or the “Hot Nam” Festival. This is a Buddhist New Year because in Laos, Buddhism has long been the national religion. People splash water to pray for luck and peace for the whole year. For Lao people, Bunpimay festival means bringing coolness, prosperity to all things, warmth, happiness, and purifying people's lives. During Tet, Lao people often have the custom of giving cloth and scarves to the elderly. During the day, people go to temples to pray. In the evening, people gather at temples to have fun, perform traditional music (morlam) and Lam vong dance. |
