Bac Ly commune authorities said that at around 3pm on April 23, the sky was sunny and suddenly darkened. A few minutes later, a tornado hit, accompanied by hail. It is estimated that dozens of houses in the villages had their roofs blown off by the tornado. Fortunately, no lives were lost.
"It was terrible. Every roof covered with corrugated iron was ripped off and swept away by the tornado. For more than 10 days now, there has been hail in the commune, but there has never been a tornado as strong as today," said teacher Nguyen Thi Huong, Bac Ly Primary School.
“Huoi Cang 1 and Huoi Cang 2 villages were the most severely affected by the recent tornado. The roofs of 25 houses, the Kindergarten and Bac Ly 1 Primary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities had their roofs blown off. The estimated damage is about 150 million VND,” said Mr. Cut Van Long, Chairman of Bac Ly Commune People’s Committee.
In My Ly commune, Ky Son district, hail also occurred in the afternoon of the same day. However, because it was not much affected by the tornado, the damage was insignificant. The commune authorities also said that for more than a week now, hail has frequently occurred in the commune.
Previously, in the communes of Huu Lap, Bao Nam, Bao Thang... hail and tornadoes also caused heavy damage, injuring one person and damaging many houses, schools, and crops.
Currently, the authorities of Bac Ly and My Ly communes are conducting an inventory of the damage to come up with a plan to support people to stabilize their lives.
