On the morning of May 28, heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning and thunderstorms occurred in the inner city of Can Tho, causing difficulties for people traveling in the morning.
The heavy rain lasted for more than an hour, accompanied by continuous thunder and lightning and wind. Many central streets in Can Tho City were flooded due to the lack of drainage.
The road leading to the Metro residential area was flooded more than half a wheel deep, forcing many people to walk because their vehicles stalled.
The road leading to the Metro residential area is flooded deeper than half a wheel.
Roads such as Tran Van Hoai, Nguyen Van Linh, Nguyen Van Cu and dozens of small alleys on 3/2 Street, 30/4 Street... many sections have water deeper than half a wheel, making it difficult for people to move.
Ms. Nguyen Hang (30 years old, in Can Tho City) said: "Due to the sudden heavy rain, I did not bring a raincoat. When I moved to Nguyen Van Linh near the Metro residential area, the water was deep, many vehicles were driving without awareness, causing water to splash on both sides, making me wet all my clothes and had to take the morning off work."
The heavy rain of the first season lasted for more than 1 hour in the morning, causing severe flooding on the central streets of Can Tho.
Similarly, when driving across Tran Van Hoai Street after the rain had stopped, the water was more than half way up her wheel, forcing Ms. Nguyen A Han (31 years old, from Can Tho City) to stop at a coffee shop and wait for the water to recede so she could drive safely. "I'm a weak driver, so I had to wait for the water to recede before continuing. If I tried to drive, I would lose control of the steering wheel or the car would turn off, making it more tiring to walk to a repair shop," Ms. Han said.
Because it rained right at the time of going to work, many people encountered difficulties.
Recently, Can Tho City has put into final trial operation of the Flood Risk Management Information System (FRMIS) before officially putting into operation, contributing to protecting the core area of Can Tho City from flood risks. Expected to be officially put into operation at the end of June, the system will forecast water levels, rainfall... from which to simulate to give early warnings of which locations will be flooded and operate to close and open sluices. The system operates completely automatically and is controlled from the operator, all information is displayed on the screen for remote control.
Flooding will continue as the Southern region, including Can Tho, is forecast to continue to have thunderstorms in the coming days.
On the morning of May 28, the Southern Hydrometeorological Station issued a warning bulletin for thunderstorms, tornadoes, lightning, hail, and localized heavy rain in the Southern region.
