Struggling to wait for the 'final' plan for the 10th grade entrance exam in 2025

The Ministry of Education and Training has announced the draft regulations on secondary and high school admissions for comments until December 18, 2024. According to the draft regulations on secondary and high school admissions of the Ministry of Education and Training, students taking the 10th grade entrance exam will take 3 subjects including Math, Literature and a third subject or a combined exam selected by the Department of Education and Training and the higher education institution with the high school and announced before March 31 every year.

2025 is also the first year that the 10th grade entrance exam will be conducted according to the 2018 General Education Program, but by the end of the first semester of the school year, the exam plan has not yet been "finalized", causing both students and teachers to struggle, especially in the context of the increasingly tense 10th grade entrance exam in localities as it is now.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Ha (Thanh Xuan, Hanoi) whose son plans to take the entrance exam to both a specialized school and a public school shared that because she does not know clearly about the exam plan, studying is more stressful and lacks a clear direction.

“In addition to studying 3 extra subjects: Math, Literature, English, my child also focuses on reviewing for the History exam. Because he is not strong in Natural Sciences, he still takes advantage of studying this subject twice a week, combined with self-studying online at home. His study schedule is packed every day, even on weekends, he does not have time off," said Ms. Ha.

Anxiety and pressure are common feelings among many parents and students preparing for the 10th grade entrance exam next year. On many groups sharing experiences of taking the 10th grade entrance exam, every day there are dozens of posts from parents posting information about finding extra classes, tutors, and teachers to review for their children.

Ms. Luong Thanh Truc (Hoang Mai, Hanoi) said that because she did not know what the exam plan would be, her family invested in having her child take extra classes in all the subjects that could be tested.

"Up to this point, it is still unknown whether there will be a fixed 3-subject exam or the 3rd subject will change every year, so my family has my child take extra classes for all subjects outside of class time. This way of studying is tiring, spread out and stressful, but if you do not try to prepare carefully, it will be very difficult to make up for the knowledge when the exam day is near," Ms. Truc shared.

This parent also hopes that the Ministry of Education and Training will soon finalize the exam plan so that students can study with peace of mind.

Mr. Dinh Duc Hien, Vice Principal of FPT Bac Giang Secondary and High School, said that up to now, the Ministry of Education and Training has not yet issued regulations on admission to grade 10 of high school for the 2025-2026 school year, so the Departments of Education and Training cannot have specific plans for localities. This causes confusion for schools, parents, students and teachers.

The new enrollment plan is directly related to the orientation of students' review for grade 10, so it is necessary for the Ministry of Education and Training to quickly issue it so that the Departments of Education and Training as well as schools can soon develop specific review plans for students.

“The promulgation of the admission regulations should have been sooner, because with the 2018 General Education Program, the learning, classification, and assessment of students are very new, and the announcement of the admission plan is delayed, causing students as well as schools to be in a state of confusion, having to come up with many different backup plans in teaching, learning, and review methods for students."

At FPT Bac Giang Secondary and High School, currently, subjects that are definitely included in the 10th grade exam such as Math and Literature are being reviewed as usual, closely following the new general education program. As for the third subject, there is currently no official decision from the Ministry, so up to this point, students are still studying in class. In addition, the school also organizes additional classes rotating between different subjects to review knowledge for students.

Ms. Hoang Thanh Nga, a junior high school teacher in Hanoi, also said that this is the first year of the 10th grade entrance exam under the new curriculum, so not only students but also teachers are very worried. Currently, schools are almost finished with the first semester, but still do not know the 10th grade enrollment plan, which is very slow. In addition to teaching knowledge according to the curriculum, teachers still combine to help students both study and review.

Ms. Nga hopes that the 10th grade admission plan will be stable over the years in terms of the number of subjects and the method of organizing the exam. Regarding the concern that students will study lopsidedly and neglect other subjects if they know in advance the 3 subjects for the 10th grade entrance exam, this teacher believes that during the learning process, students must complete regular and periodic assessment tests to meet the requirements of the new program.

Recently, the Government Office issued a document conveying Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long's opinion on handling press reports related to the draft regulations on middle school and high school enrollment.

The document stated that recently, the press has reported information related to the draft regulations on middle school and high school admissions.

Accordingly, the draft regulations on junior high school and high school admissions proposes that the 10th grade exam will include three subjects including math, literature and a third subject or a combined exam selected by the Department of Education and Training and the university with a high school and announced before March 31 every year.

On forums, many parents agree with the plan to take 3 exams for grade 10 high school, but are concerned and worried about the "secret" third exam subject being announced so close to the exam date. Parents think that the Ministry of Education and Training should adjust the time to announce the exam subjects earlier so that students can review.

In response to the above information, the Deputy Prime Minister directed the Ministry of Education and Training to carefully review, research, and absorb people's opinions to complete and promulgate the Regulations on admission to junior high schools and high schools according to its authority, including considering the time of announcement for early exams to create favorable conditions for schools and students, especially in proactively planning appropriate and effective teaching, learning, and review.
