Re-select exam subjects

The survey is considered the 2025 high school graduation mock exam for 12th graders in Hanoi, taking place from March 21-23, with the Department of Education and Training setting the questions, closely following the sample questions of the Ministry of Education and Training . As a result, more than 31,000 exams of Hanoi students had below average scores, including thousands of failed exams (nearly 5,000 exams with 1 point or less), warning of the risk of failing high school graduation.

The Center for VocationalEducation - Continuing Education of Dong Anh District (Hanoi) focuses on organizing review sessions for nearly 300 12th grade students, focusing on improving the quality of teaching during regular hours, especially from mid-February, when applying new regulations on extra teaching and learning.

Outside of regular school hours, teachers organize free review sessions at school for students with a duration of 2 periods/subject/week. It is expected that by the end of April, the center will organize a survey test with 12th grade students, thereby continuing to analyze the survey results, paying attention to high-risk students, identifying the causes more clearly and strengthening coordination with families to promote support solutions for students to pass the graduation exam.

The survey results of My Duc C High School show that 6/389 12th grade students are at risk of failing the graduation exam. The school has urgently developed a review plan for these students with a roadmap, solutions and goals for each stage, while increasing support in all aspects to help them be more confident before the exam.

Ms. Vu Thi Nu, Vice Principal of Mai Hac De High School, said that right after the survey results were available, the school calculated the graduation scores and found that 1.36% of students were at risk of failing. The reasons were low input, poor learning awareness, and students choosing subjects that did not match their abilities.

After the test, some students re-selected their elective subjects to suit their abilities. According to Ms. Nu, since the middle of the first semester, the school has opened a Math and Literature tutoring class to help students with weak academic performance.

From January 2025, the school will organize intensive review sessions for grade 12 students for high school graduation exams. For students at risk of failing graduation, homeroom teachers will coordinate with subject teachers and parents to encourage and take appropriate measures.

Ms. Cao Thanh Nga, Principal of Phan Huy Chu High School (Dong Da) said that the overall survey results of the whole school were in the top 30 of the city. Of which, 2 subjects had average scores in the top 7. In general, 12th grade students have tried hard and made efforts in their studies.

To encourage students, even though it is just a test, the school still organizes rewards and commendations for students with good results. Students with below average test scores (below 5) are given free classes in the late afternoon every day with a capacity of 2 periods/subject/week.

“These students all want to “graduate” from such classes. They are really sad to have to sit in these classes,” Ms. Nga said.

From the survey results, the school analyzed the average score distribution for each subject teacher so that they know whether it is positive or negative compared to the general level of the whole city and the whole school in order to have review solutions for students.

The school also held separate meetings with the 12th grade homeroom teachers and subject group leaders to “screen” students into groups. The group with good abilities will be pushed forward to achieve better results, the group with poor abilities will coordinate with the homeroom teachers and parents to help them.

Through the survey results, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training pointed out the risk of failing the high school graduation exam from exams with low results, score 1 (failure score) or lower. For each subject, the most worrying results were in Literature, with 1,239 exams; Math with 298 exams; Physics with 54 exams; English with 12 exams...

Test before exam

Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training Tran The Cuong said that the survey helps students get acquainted with the graduation exam according to the new program, thereby determining the direction of review; the survey results also help schools promptly adjust their teaching and review organization to improve the quality of the exam.

In addition to the free review time prescribed by the Ministry of Education and Training, which is 2 periods/subject/week at school, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training encourages students to review on their own in many ways such as studying through the online learning and testing system, studying on television, etc.

To facilitate students to review before the high school graduation exam, the Department has directed schools to implement review plans for the high school graduation exam in a reasonable manner, ensuring that they do not last more than 3 weeks after the end of the school year. Schools have implemented their review plans publicly and transparently.

In particular, the city will organize review classes for 12th graders completely free of charge and voluntarily, without charging fees, in accordance with the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training. Each student will be fully reviewed for four graduation exam subjects and can self-study through the school's digital learning resources.

Regarding the recognition of high school graduation, new points in the regulations such as increasing the rate of using learning assessment results in grades 10, 11 and 12 to 50% (previously 30% and only using grade 12 results) aim to comprehensively assess the capacity of students studying according to the 2018 General Education Program.

Candidates with foreign language certificates that meet the regulations are exempted from the foreign language exam, but will not be converted into 10 points in the graduation recognition consideration as in 2024; vocational certificate points will be eliminated for all candidates; IT, foreign language certificates, and vocational secondary school certificates will be eliminated for candidates in the continuing education system from the 2025 exam to move towards comprehensive and fair assessment for all students.
