For the first time, Fiingroup has collaborated with a number of units to publish income reports of CEOs, Board Chairmen and independent members of the Board of Directors at public companies.
Which 15 companies pay the highest CEO income in the market?
According to a recently released report, the average income of a CEO is 2.5 billion VND/year in 2023.
Of these, real estate, financial services (mainly securities companies) and insurance are the industries with the highest average income for the position of general director.
Note, income in this report is defined to include only remuneration, salary, allowances and bonuses arising… in 2023.
In fact, corporate leaders' income may also include ESOPs, dividends, bonus shares, other benefits such as housing, children's tuition, family insurance, travel allowances, etc. The published data does not include these expenses.
Quite surprisingly, the top 15 businesses with the highest CEO income, the top position belongs to Kinh Bac Urban Development Corporation (KBC) with 17 billion VND.
Previously, the foreign CEO of Masan (MSN) was famous for his high income and was considered the "biggest" in the market.
However, according to recently released broad data, MSN is the second-ranked company in terms of CEO compensation with VND14.7 billion.
Data: Fiingroup
Coming in third after MSN are a series of real estate giants such as Vinhomes (VHM, Nam Long (NLG), Vingroup (VIC) and Vinceom Reatail (VRE)…
While the IT, banking, and retail industries are performing better than average with high return on equity (ROE) (about 15% in 2023), the average CEO income is relatively low.
The main reason given is that this income does not take into account the value of the ESOP bonus shares that the board of directors received during the year, according to a Fiingroup representative.
By type of enterprise, the report shows that the average income of CEOs at state-owned enterprises is significantly lower than that of private enterprises, although their performance is quite similar.
Average chairman income 1.7 billion VND
A report from Fiingroup also shows that the average income of the Chairman of the Board of Directors for 2023 is 1.7 billion VND/person.
Banks and financial services (mainly securities companies) have the highest average income for board chairmen, thanks to the specific management involvement of these leaders.
Regarding the income of independent members of the Board of Directors, the report said there is a large difference between industries. The highest is in the personal and banking industries, but the average income is still symbolic in many businesses.
Specifically, the highest average income is at PNJ and banks, respectively 2 billion VND and 1.2 billion VND/year, while the remaining group mostly fluctuates between 100 - 500 million VND/year.
Companies with high remuneration are all industry leaders.
According to the statistical unit's observation, independent members of the Board of Directors with high remuneration often hold additional specific positions such as the audit committee, strategy committee, etc. of those enterprises.
In addition, in terms of capitalization scale, the average income of independent members of the Board of Directors will improve sharply in the small-cap group in 2023 and decrease slightly in the mid-cap group.
At the same time, the average income of independent members of the Board of Directors is not significantly different between the state-owned and private enterprise groups.
