On May 29, news from the Kien Giang Province Association for the Support of Poor Patients said that the unit is coordinating with the Mercer On Mission Volunteer Group to organize free examination and treatment of bone and joint diseases and the installation of prosthetic arms and legs for poor patients and people with disabilities.
Mercer On Mission Volunteers Fit Prosthetic Legs for Disabled People
The Mercer On Mission volunteer group consists of 53 members from Mercer University (USA). It is expected that from May 27 to June 2, the group will examine and provide medicine to about 600 poor patients with bone and joint problems; and install about 360 prosthetic legs and arms for the disabled. The total value of medicine and equipment is about 4.4 billion VND, sponsored by the group.
In addition to patients and poor disabled people in Kien Giang province, there are also poor patients in neighboring provinces. Cases with especially difficult circumstances will be supported with travel expenses, gifts, shoes, walkers, etc.
The doctor examines and adjusts the most suitable prosthesis for the patient.
Mr. Truong Thang Tran, Chairman of the Association for Supporting Poor Patients of Kien Giang Province, said that this is a program of profound humanitarian significance, contributing to creating conditions for people with disabilities to participate in production, develop the economy, and strive to stabilize their lives.
According to Mr. Tran, the volunteer doctors and nurses from Mercer University are highly specialized in bone and joint treatment, prosthetic limbs and are very dedicated, responsible and enthusiastic with patients. This is the third time the delegation has come to Kien Giang. In 2023, the delegation examined and fitted prosthetic limbs for more than 1,200 disabled people in Kien Giang at a cost of more than 4 billion VND.
