The total number of candidates registered for the National Excellent Student Exam for the 2023-2024 school year is 5,819 candidates, an increase of 1,230 candidates compared to the 2022-2023 school year.

Of the total 12 subjects of this exam, Literature and English are the subjects with the most candidates, with 648 and 639 candidates respectively. The exam will have 68 examination boards with a total of 403 examination rooms.

The exam content is included in the 2006 High School Education Program and instructions for implementing the specialized program for high school subjects according to Official Dispatch No. 10803/BGDĐT-GDTrH dated December 16, 2009 of the Ministry of Education and Training.

Previously, on October 10, 2023, the Ministry of Education and Training issued Circular No. 17/2023/TT-BGDDT on the Regulations on the National Excellent Student Selection Exam (replacing Circular No. 56/2011/TT-BGDDT) with many new points.

In particular, the Regulation stipulates that the maximum number of candidates taking each exam subject of each unit is 10 candidates, and 20 candidates for Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.

This regulation also stipulates that instead of organizing practical exams in the National Excellent Student Selection Exam, the exam questions for Physics, Chemistry, and Biology will have content that requires candidates to solve using knowledge related to experimental and practical skills.

The new regulations also increase the rate of winners of national competitions for excellent students, ensuring compliance with the regulations of regional and international Olympics.

Accordingly, 60% of the contestants won prizes from the Encouragement Prize or higher (previous years were 50%); in which, the total number of First, Second, and Third prizes does not exceed 60% of the total number of prizes, the number of First prizes does not exceed 5% of the total number of prizes.

Notably, the new Regulations have added provisions on granting Certificates of Participation in the National High School Excellent Student Competition to candidates who participated in the competition but did not win any prizes.

This helps students to have a permanent personal record of their exam participation.

According to Circular 17, every year, the Ministry of Education and Training organizes two national competitions to select excellent students, including: National high school competition to select excellent students (referred to as national competition to select excellent students) and competition to select high school students for national teams to compete in international and regional Olympic competitions (referred to as Olympic team competition).

National competition to select excellent students aims to motivate and encourage teachers and students to promote their creativity, good teaching and good learning;

Contribute to promoting improvement and enhancement of teaching and learning quality, management quality and direction of educational management levels;

At the same time, discover students with aptitude for the subject to create a source of training, realizing the goal of training talents for the country.
