'Every day I study from morning to night, I only sleep a few hours a day, it's very stressful. Even if I go to extra classes, I still feel pressured, if I don't go to extra classes, I don't know what will happen,' said Lam Phuong, a 12th grade student who will take the high school graduation exam this June.
This morning, February 15, the 2025 Exam Season Consulting program of Thanh Nien Newspaper opened at Dong Nai University with about 10,000 high school students in Bien Hoa City and other localities in Dong Nai province participating. Nguyen Thi Bao Chau, a student of class 12A9, Nguyen Trai High School, Bien Hoa City, said she plans to put her first choice in the economic law major, University of Economics and Law (Ho Chi Minh City National University).
To confidently pass the high school graduation exam and apply for university, Bao Chau must study at least 4 subjects: math, literature, English and chemistry. Currently, when Circular 29 of the Ministry of Education and Training on extra teaching and learning takes effect, teachers who teach Bao Chau in class will not be allowed to teach their own students for money outside of school. This will probably force Bao Chau to find a review center taught by other teachers.
According to Bao Chau, the general psychology of final year students is pressure. This year, taking the high school graduation exam according to the 2018 General Education Program, students are also more confused. Studying with teachers who are considered "famous" and tutoring centers not only helps students feel more confident, but according to Bao Chau, it also helps them gain more experience in reviewing and taking exams.
Planning to put her first choice into the livestock industry at Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry so that she can later support the management of her family's goat farm, Ha My (a student at Ton Duc Thang High School, Tan Phu District, Dong Nai) focused more time than ever on reviewing math, physics, and chemistry. Like many of her classmates at this time, Ha My not only studied on her own but also registered for extra classes outside. "Not only helping students systematize their knowledge, I see that the teachers of the extra classes also show us tips for doing the test, tips for getting high scores, tips for doing multiple choice tests, which I think is also very necessary," Ha My shared.
Senior students look for admission information at booths. This is a period when students often face a lot of stress and pressure.
Going to extra classes but still worried
Loving English language and wanting to become an English teacher in the future, Lam Phuong (Ton Duc Thang High School, Tan Phu District) said that she is facing a lot of pressure as there are only a few months left until the high school graduation exam and university entrance exam. Planning to apply to Saigon University or possibly consider studying further at Da Lat University, Lam Phuong said that during this time, she often does not have much time to sleep, instead she studies and studies. Studying at school, taking extra classes outside, and studying at home.
"The English language major usually has high admission scores and many good students, so I'm very worried. Teachers are currently not allowed to teach at home according to Circular 29 of the Ministry of Education and Training. From next week, according to the announcement, teachers will review our high school graduation exams for free at school," Lam Phuong said.
In the current context of tightening extra teaching and learning, the Dong Nai female student said that she has to try harder, and senior students like her also have to try harder. "Every day I study from morning to night, only sleeping a few hours a day, it's very stressful. My family encourages me but I still feel worried. Even if I go to extra classes, I still feel pressured, if I don't go to extra classes, I don't know what will happen," Lam Phuong confided.
Choose self-study for many benefits
From another perspective, Tran Ha Nam, a 12C05 student at Le Hong Phong High School in Bien Hoa City, mainly chooses self-study. He has participated in some online courses with famous exam preparation teachers online, but otherwise does not take extra classes outside. Instead, he studies by himself and joins a self-study community with excellent students across the country. "In this community, we share exam preparation questions with each other, good ways to solve problems, and good study methods," Ha Nam said.
Ha Nam, a male student who mainly studied on his own and did not attend extra classes during his high school years.
Ha Nam was once a member of the provincial-level excellent student exam preparation team, but then, because he had to help with family work, he stopped studying. Previously, he also studied on his own to prepare for the 10th grade entrance exam. This year, Ha Nam wants to pass the entrance exam for the mechanical engineering major at the University of Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University).
Ha Nam also introduced the faces of friends in its self-study community and all of them have achieved high achievements such as Nguyen Hoang Duy, a student of Nguyen Khuyen High School, An Giang, who won the encouragement prize for excellent chemistry students at the national level. Pham Dang Duc Manh (Vinh Loc High School, Thua Thien-Hue), a student excellent in math and information technology at the provincial level... "When we study more by ourselves, we will be the ones to create our own timetable and schedule, we will also systematize our knowledge to see where we are weak and improve ourselves", the male student said.
