Man prosecuted for growing more than 1,600 opium plants in Cao Bang

According to news from Cao Bang Provincial Police on March 15, the Investigation Police Agency of Nguyen Binh District Police has just prosecuted and detained Dang Van Choi (born in 1965, residing in Na Ngu hamlet, Mai Long commune, Nguyen Binh district) for the crime of growing opium poppies.

On March 6, while on duty in the Tra Lau ravine area of ​​Na Ngu hamlet, Mai Long commune police discovered a clump of plants suspected to be opium poppies.

The verification results showed that all of these trees belonged to Mr. Dang Van Choi. The working group made a record of the incident and seized all the evidence, including 700 trees.

Later, Dang Van Choi voluntarily confessed that there were 2 other places where this type of tree was grown, with 257 and 700 trees respectively. The total number of trees seized was 1,657.

Dang Van Choi admitted that it was opium; he grew the plants himself in small fields in the ravine area for personal use.

On the same day, the Investigation Police Agency of Nguyen Binh District urgently searched Dang Van Choi's residence and discovered and seized a nylon bag containing many dried fruits and seeds, with a total weight of 14.0635 grams (Choi admitted that these were seeds and fruits of the opium plant).

The entire amount of evidence was sent by the Investigation Police Agency of Nguyen Binh District Police to the Institute of Criminal Science of the Ministry of Public Security for appraisal. On March 13, the Institute concluded that the 1,657 plants sent by Nguyen Binh District Police were opium plants.

Another case of opium cultivation was also discovered in Lai Chau on March 5. Ta Tong Commune Police, Muong Te District received information that in a deep forest area about 4 hours of climbing from the residential area, there was a plot of land growing opium. On the morning of March 5, a working group of Muong Te District Police caught Ms. Ly Khu Nu (67 years old) red-handed while she was going to the opium field to exploit resin.

This field has an area of ​​873 square meters with over 3,200 opium poppy plants in the process of growing, many of which are ready to produce resin. Ms. Nu confessed that she secretly planted them to get resin for use, and if she harvested a lot, she would sell it.

The authorities seized all the opium plants and temporarily detained Ly Khu Nu.
