"J-League is not only a top tournament in Asia but also a place that has given Phuong valuable lessons in his career," striker Nguyen Cong Phuong said about his time playing in Japan. The player born in 1995 has just become the broadcasting ambassador for J-League in Vietnam. Japan's highest professional tournament is where Cong Phuong tried his hand but has not had the opportunity to play.
Cong Phuong becomes the representative face of J-League.
Cong Phuong added: " The months of playing in Japan were challenging but also extremely memorable. Phuong experienced a top-notch professional football environment where discipline, speed and precision are top priorities.
Every training session, every match is an opportunity to learn and develop myself. Despite the difficulties, thanks to J-League, Phuong has become more mature, understanding the value of perseverance and constant effort."
Japan was Cong Phuong's first destination when he went abroad to develop his career. The striker from Nghe An played for Mito Hollyhock in 2016, playing 5 matches in J-League 2. After 1 year, Cong Phuong returned to Vietnam and continued to go abroad to seek opportunities at Sint Truiden (Belgium), Incheon United (Korea).
In 2023, Cong Phuong signed a contract with a Japanese team for the second time, this time Yokohama FC playing in the J-League. Despite trying very hard to prove himself to compete for a place, the player born in 1995 still did not appear in the J-League before Yokohama FC was relegated.
After 2 seasons with Yokohama FC, Cong Phuong returned to Vietnam to play for Binh Phuoc Club in the First Division. This striker started with good form, scoring 4 goals. However, recent injuries have caused Cong Phuong to lose the opportunity to show his ability to seek a return to the Vietnam national team.
He has just recovered and returned to the reserve list of Binh Phuoc Club. In the March 2025 training session of the National Team, coach Kim Sang-sik did not call Cong Phuong.
