Block C is "inferior" in high schools with high 10th grade benchmark scores

(Dan Tri) - At high schools with a 10th grade entrance score of 40 or higher, the group of students choosing history and geography is smaller than the group choosing physics and chemistry for the 2025 high school graduation exam.

Ms. Nguyen Boi Quynh - Principal of Viet Duc High School - said that English is still the subject chosen by the largest number of students for the 2025 high school graduation exam.

The school has 810 students, of which 768 choose foreign languages, of which English is the main foreign language, accounting for 94.8%.

In the remaining elective subjects, physics is chosen by the most students. Next are history and chemistry with approximately the same number of students at around 200.

The next positions are economics and law education, geography, biology. However, the number of students choosing biology is only 35.

5 students chose computer science and no students chose technology.

Thus, when combined with the two compulsory subjects of math and literature, the percentage of students choosing the subject combination of block D01 (math, literature, English) is absolutely dominant. The next position is block A1.

The number of students choosing the traditional A block (math, physics, chemistry) reached 24.6%. This number is higher than the group choosing the traditional C block (literature, history, geography).

Another high school in the inner city has a rate of approximately 25% of students choosing both physics and chemistry, while the rate of students choosing both history and geography is about 20%.

In terms of individual subjects, English is the most chosen. The next subjects are physics, chemistry, history, geography, biology, and computer science. Of these, biology and computer science are chosen by less than 10 students.

No students chose technology and economics and law education.

At Nguyen Gia Thieu High School, the percentage of students choosing the traditional C block combination is at a record low. According to principal Le Trung Kien, out of 674 students in the school, only 6 students chose both history and geography.

69 students chose the Physics - Chemistry group. The majority of students chose the Physics - English group (275 students) and History - English group (168 students).

Ms. Nguyen Boi Quynh said that the reason why top high schools have a high percentage of students choosing natural sciences is due to early orientation.

"Right from the beginning of grade 10, the school has organized very detailed subject combination consultation sessions for students and parents.

The school encourages students to choose subjects based on their strengths, interests and future career orientation. However, not all students clearly understand their strengths and determine the career they will pursue.

Besides, physics and chemistry at secondary school level are not really focused on, making many students afraid, thinking that studying those subjects is difficult and not interesting.

When consulting, the school carefully analyzes the characteristics and significance of each subject so that students understand the benefits of natural sciences. A country will find it difficult to develop if basic sciences are not developed.

The school also allows students to change subjects if they do not find them suitable. However, after the first semester, the number of students changing subjects is very small, less than 10 cases. Most of them change from block D to block A00 or A01, not vice versa," the principal of Viet Duc High School shared.

From this reality, Ms. Boi Quynh believes that teachers and schools need to break down students' psychological barriers to natural subjects right from the beginning of grade 10.

If this time is missed, the ratio of students choosing natural and social subjects will be seriously unbalanced, leading to limited choices for students when entering university as well as future job opportunities.

From another perspective, the vice principal of a high school said that students' choice of natural sciences in high school as well as graduation exams is largely due to orientation from middle school.

"In fact, students with an inclination towards natural sciences from secondary school will choose high schools that are strong in this subject. Therefore, the percentage of students choosing the A, A1 subject combination at these schools will also be higher than other schools," the vice principal commented.

Analyzing the reason why technology and information technology are rarely chosen by students for graduation exams, he said that this is related to the university admission combination. "Rarely do candidates choose subjects that have never been included in previous admission combinations, because this reduces their own chances," he said.
