Van Hien University team 'escaped'
Van Hien University team reached the final round of Group B of the 3rd Vietnam Youth Student Football Tournament - 2025 THACO Cup (TNSV THACO Cup 2025) with the goal of winning to enter the quarterfinals. However, their opponent, the University of Technology (VNU-HCM) team, was only one win away from passing the group stage.
Therefore, it is understandable that the calculated and tense match took place at Ton Duc Thang University on the afternoon of March 8. Van Hien University played better, but Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (VNU-HCM) also had a very good match. Captain Hoang Quoc Phong's steady possession and coordination ability helped the players of Bach Khoa control the rhythm of the game, thus not being inferior to their opponents.
Van Hien University (blue shirt) won the ticket thanks to a goal in the 78th minute.
The competitive spirit is a plus point of the University of Technology (VNU-HCMC) team, when despite having lost 2 matches, they still have high morale. However, like the previous matches, the strikers of the University of Technology (VNU-HCMC) in this tournament are very unlucky in front of the opponent's goal. In the nerve-wracking match with Van Hien University, wastefulness came at a high price.
As for Van Hien University, being pushed into a corner throughout the match gave the team the momentum to counterattack at the decisive moment. Vo Tran Hoang Phuc's header in the 78th minute, one of the final attacks, brought Van Hien University an overwhelming joy. The extremely "enthusiastic" celebration of both teachers and students, between the main and reserve players, between the whole team and the audience, relieved the suffocating pressure that Van Hien University had to endure.
"The goal came from a corner kick, the ball was crossed towards the second post and I was there at the right time to finish it successfully. I am very happy to be able to contribute to the team's victory and help the school advance to the quarter-finals. This was an emotional and dramatic match," "hero" Vo Tran Hoang Phuc affirmed.
Vo Tran Hoang Phuc received double awards for first goal scorer and best player of the match.
Next goal
In the quarterfinals of the Vietnam Youth Student Football Tournament last year, the Van Hien University team unfortunately stopped in the penalty shootout against the Ho Chi Minh City University of Physical Education and Sports (the team that later went on to win the championship). For coach Hoang Hai Duong, the lessons of the past, whether success or failure, are valuable.
"We are happy to have won a very important match, because if it had been a draw, both teams would have been eliminated. The players of Van Hien University tried their best. After the 0-0 draw in the first half, I told the students to play leisurely and comfortably, if they could create pressure, the goals would come. With school football, if the players were trained regularly like professional players, they could play well for 80 minutes. But these are students, so we have to play slowly, then choose the right moment to break through.

Enthusiastic fans in the stands
Last year, Van Hien University team had many players who made a difference, but this year it is not as strong. We have 10 new first-year players, most of the team is still new. Therefore, the coaching staff practice tactics more synchronously, instead of depending on any individual. That is the path we will take," Mr. Hoang Hai Duong affirmed.
The strategist of Van Hien University confidently shared before the quarter-finals: "We calculate each match one by one. First, we try to get into the quarter-finals. Now that we are in the quarter-finals, we have to try to get into the semi-finals."
After 3 matches in Group B, Van Hien University team won 4 points. Mr. Hoang Hai Duong's students won against Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (VNU-HCM) 1-0, tied with Thanh Hoa University of Culture, Sports and Tourism 0-0 and lost to Da Nang University of Physical Education and Sports 1-2.
