Since the beginning of 2024, Ms. Trieu Thi Linh's family in Ban Dan village, Don Phong commune, Bach Thong district has converted their rice fields to grow cucumbers. In the first crop, she planted 400 m2 ; realizing the high value of converting crop structure and applying science to production, in the last Winter-Spring crop, her family increased the area to 1,100 m2 .
She said that melons grown in the Summer-Autumn season grow best thanks to the use of high-quality varieties, proper planting and care methods, and favorable weather and climate conditions, so the plants grow and develop quickly, and can be harvested after nearly 60 days. In the Winter-Spring season, due to the cold climate, the plants grow more slowly. Her family has chosen varieties suitable for each time of the year, followed the processes and techniques for care, pest control, and proactively provided water for the plants to grow.
After a period of growing this crop, Ms. Linh realized that cucumbers bring much higher economic efficiency than rice cultivation, and can be grown 4 times a year; the family will consider maintaining this crop in the coming seasons.
Ms. Nguyen Thu Huyen, Xuat Hoa ward, Bac Kan city said that her family often grows vegetables and fruits in the off-season, so the family invested in a greenhouse to develop crops. In winter, there is a lot of frost, so growing plants in a greenhouse is less affected by weather conditions, and the plants grow and develop better.
These changes are partly due to the implementation of science and technology projects in the province. People see the effectiveness and apply them to production. Many projects have been effective, such as projects on developing corn, rice, tea, seedless persimmons, chestnut trees, etc., bringing new varieties with high productivity and quality into production. In the field of animal husbandry, science and technology projects have contributed to changing the mindset of care, shifting from small-scale to large-scale farms, ranches, and commercial livestock farming. People have techniques for care, disease prevention, and product preservation, so the quality has been improved. In addition, the application of modern machinery in deep processing has diversified farmers' products. Not only raw production, farmers have invested in machinery and technology to improve the quality of products such as extract, tea, essential oils, pharmaceuticals, etc., increasing their value compared to before. Thanks to the application of science and technology, farmers produce off-season vegetables to meet consumer demand.
In order to promote research, application and transfer of science and technology into production and life, Party committees and authorities at all levels from the province to the grassroots have gradually turned science and technology into an important driving force to develop productive forces and improve productivity and quality.
Since 2023, the province has implemented the project "Receiving technology and biological products to build a model for treating livestock waste to create organic fertilizer for agricultural production in Bac Kan province", accordingly, a pilot model using microbial organic fertilizer products has been built on an area of 2 hectares in Bang Phuc commune, Cho Don district. Households were given fertilizers, instructions on planting techniques, care, pruning, etc., initially bringing economic value to households participating in production.

Shan Tuyet tea tree care techniques
Ms. Hoang Thi Len's family in Bang Phuc commune, Cho Don district, is taking care of 0.8 hectares of Shan Tuyet tea under the Project. She was provided with organic fertilizer to take care of the plants and was instructed by staff on techniques to help the plants grow. She said that since being instructed on techniques to take care of the plants, the plants have grown faster, have a more beautiful appearance, have more leaves, more buds, and the quality of the tea is also better than before.
Mr. La Dinh Tu's family previously cultivated according to old practices, only weeding and pruning branches without fertilizing, so productivity and quality were not high. After participating in the Project, he took care of 1 hectare of tea trees using organic microbial fertilizer. Through monitoring, he noticed that productivity and quality were much higher, the tea had more buds, greener leaves, more beautiful appearance, more harvests, and higher income than before. After the Project ended, he continued to maintain the knowledge he had been instructed to take care of his family's tea area.
From innovation in thinking and production methods, people have boldly transformed the structure of crops and livestock, creating agricultural products with higher value and competitiveness. People apply science and technology, use organic fertilizers, microbial fertilizers, and mechanize the fields to reduce manual labor, save time, reduce costs and increase profits. Many economic models, cooperatives, and cooperatives have been established, forming large commodity production areas, focusing on OCOP product brands to help increase product value. The production value of the agricultural sector has grown by 3.66% per year. Currently, Bac Kan has over 200 3-star or higher OCOP products, including 4 National 5-star OCOP products, 7 products with intellectual property protection...
