The Gang River embankment project in Ngoc Son commune suffered severe landslides during the recent flood, attracting public attention because the project had just been completed and put into use not long ago.
Regarding the incident, the Thanh Chuong District Construction Investment Project Management Board (Thanh Chuong District Construction Investment Project Management Board) said that after the Gang River embankment project section collapsed and cracked, it requested the construction unit to temporarily fix the landslide to ensure people's travel.
Director of Thanh Chuong District Construction Investment Project Management Board Bui Ton Khiem said that the project will be constructed and completed at the end of 2023. This project is part of the Government's capital allocated to overcome the consequences of natural disasters.
The total value of the project is 1.5 billion VND, the project has been handed over, but is still under warranty. The construction unit is Ngoc Thanh Construction Company Limited (Ngoc Son Commune, Thanh Chuong District).
Regarding the cause of the dike cracking, Mr. Khiem said that there is currently no full assessment of the cause. However, the initial preliminary suspicion is that there are mud pockets under the dike to the foot of the project, and rising water during the gradually receding flood will cause the mud pockets to burst, causing gaps in the dike to the foot and then causing landslides.
Regarding public concerns and doubts about the quality of this project, Mr. Khiem said that the construction quality of the project is guaranteed. The entire dike is quite long, and many sections have also subsided, not just the newly constructed area put into use.
In addition, Mr. Khiem added that we must wait for more time, more floods like the past, and check the current situation to be able to make a comprehensive assessment to have a plan to handle the project for long-term stability. Currently, we are directing the construction unit to temporarily fix it to ensure people's traffic.
Previously, the project survey also performed drilling to assess the geology, but due to the wide distance between the drills, they did not hit the right spots containing mud pockets. Therefore, in this re-evaluation, it will be proposed to perform thicker geological drills to get better and more accurate results, so that the re-construction will be more stable later...
The recent floods in Nghe An have caused considerable damage to many infrastructures such as bridges, culverts, and embankments. Currently, some localities are still struggling to overcome the damage and ensure stable travel and life for the people.
