Israeli news portal Ynet on March 1 quoted sources as saying that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent Military Secretary Major General Roman Gofman to Moscow to coordinate and strengthen cooperation, taking into account security interests.
According to Ynet, Mr. Gofman is expected to hold a series of meetings on security issues.
Another goal of the trip will be to ask Russia, through intermediaries, to put pressure on the Hamas movement to push for an agreement to release Israeli hostages from the Gaza Strip, among whom is the son of Russian citizen Maxim Kharkin, the source added.
Russia has repeatedly affirmed its commitment to the "two states for two peoples" formula, stressing that Israel's security can only be guaranteed through the realization of the Palestinians' rights to their homeland within the 1967 borders.
