A US aircraft carrier docked at a South Korean naval base on March 2 to reaffirm Washington's commitment to expanding deterrence, just days after North Korea tested a cruise missile.

According to Yonhap today, citing an announcement from the South Korean Navy, the appearance of the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier and the US strike group at the port of Busan (South Korea) is to enhance interoperability and organize friendly activities between the two navies. This is the first US aircraft carrier to visit South Korea since June 2024.

"Our military will strongly respond to any threats from North Korea and the South Korea-US alliance will support peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the region through close cooperation," Rear Admiral Lee Nam-gyu, director of the Republic of Korea Fleet's maritime operations center, said.

For his part, Commander of US Forces Korea Xavier Brunson said: "The USS Carl Vinson carrier strike group's operations demonstrate our commitment to strengthening the defense of our allies and partners and strengthening our combat capabilities."

“This visit, especially when combined with joint, realistic training across the board, will enhance interoperability and ensure both sides build readiness to deter conflict and maintain stability in the Republic of Korea and the region,” Brunson added.

North Korean missiles improve accuracy thanks to experience in Ukraine?

Earlier, on February 28, North Korea announced that it had tested a strategic cruise missile to demonstrate its military's counterattack capabilities and readiness for potential nuclear operations. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has repeatedly stressed that the military must be fully ready to use its nuclear weapons.

Regarding the prospect of easing tensions on the Korean Peninsula, US President Donald Trump once announced that he would approach leader Kim Jong-un again to restore diplomacy. North Korea has not directly responded to Mr. Trump's proposal.

AP quoted experts as saying that Mr. Kim may not accept Mr. Trump's offer soon because the US leader is currently focused on resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

During his first presidential term (2017 - 2021), Mr. Trump met Mr. Kim three times to discuss the future of North Korea's nuclear program, but in the end there was no breakthrough.
