After many years of working in freshwater fish farming in Ia Nang irrigation lake, Mr. Pham Man's family (group 4, Ia Kha town) has a good income. Mr. Man said: In 2017, he started raising fish in cages in Ia Nang irrigation lake.
“With the current scale, I harvest about 4-5 tons of fish each year. Currently, the price of red tilapia fluctuates between 38,000 and 42,000 VND/kg. After deducting expenses, I make a profit of more than 40 million VND,” said Mr. Man.
Currently, fish farmers in Ia To commune have taken advantage of natural food sources to reduce costs. Mr. Pham Ngoc Tho (village 6, Ia To commune) said: His family has a fish pond of nearly 1 hectare. Every year, he releases 2-3 tons of fish of various types to serve customers who come to fish for services and cook on site.
“To reduce costs and increase the quality of fish meat, I focus on using natural food for fish. Accordingly, I do not use bran but cut grass and buy corn to feed the fish to make the meat fragrant and chewy. After deducting expenses, each year, the family makes a profit of about 50 million VND,” Mr. Tho shared.

Taking advantage of the water source from Ia Cham irrigation lake, Mr. Phan Dinh Dai (village 5, Ia To commune) dug a pond and then brought water in to raise grass carp to increase his income. With an area of over 1 sao, each year, he releases about 13 kg of grass carp fry. When the fish are small, he feeds them with a little bran. When the fish are 3 months old or older, he cuts banana trees into small pieces and cuts more grass to feed the fish.
“With this method of farming, the investment cost is insignificant. Every year, my family harvests more than 300 kg of fish, selling for 90-95 thousand VND/kg. After deducting expenses, I make a profit of about 25 million VND,” said Mr. Dai.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Phan Dinh Tham - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ia Grai district - informed: With a system of hydroelectric reservoirs, irrigation and rivers, Ia Grai has many advantages to develop freshwater fish farming. Through the results of surface water monitoring by the functional sector, it shows that: The quality of surface water sources in these areas ensures safety for aquaculture.
Recently, many households have boldly invested in fish farming to improve their income. To ensure economic efficiency in aquaculture, the district has recommended that people introduce suitable aquatic species with high productivity and yield; supported farmers in accessing loan sources and organized training and guidance on farming techniques.
Up to now, the area of aquaculture and exploitation of aquatic products in the district has reached nearly 430 hectares, of which the natural exploitation area is 382 hectares; the pond and cage area is 47.7 hectares. The main aquaculture products are catfish, tilapia, silver carp, grass carp, etc. In 2024, the total output of naturally exploited fish and fish from cages in the district will reach more than 300 tons.
