Security Council running out of patience with Gaza ceasefire talks

"There is growing anxiety in the Council that something needs to be done in some way - either there is a ceasefire, or the Council will have to look at what else can be done to achieve a ceasefire," said Ambassador Samuel Zbogar of Slovenia.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also urged the warring parties in Gaza on Tuesday to agree to a temporary ceasefire to allow time to vaccinate some 640,000 Palestinian children against polio.

The Security Council in June adopted Resolution 2735, backing a three-phase plan put forward by US President Joe Biden to halt fighting in Gaza and release hostages held by Hamas. However, mediation efforts led by the US, Egypt and Qatar have yet to reach an agreement.

“The issue is implementation. The framework is there,” said US Ambassador to the United Nations Robert Wood. “My recommendation is if you want to make a positive contribution, make it, otherwise keep quiet.”
