Infrastructure and landscape investment
For nearly a month now, the 50m road leading to the center of Thanh Ha pottery village has been under urgent construction. According to the design, both sides of the road will be decorated with reliefs, patterns, and ceramic motifs to create a landscape and check-in point for tourists, with a total investment of about 1 billion VND.
Mr. Nguyen Van Nhat - Chairman of Thanh Ha Ward People's Committee said that in recent years, the state budget has invested an average of 1 billion VND per year to complete the infrastructure and services of Thanh Ha pottery village. In particular, the main focus is on improving the landscape and environment such as paving walkways, decorating fences, creating check-in points... Such as building a parking lot outside the pottery village (area of 2,500m2 , completed and put into use in June 2023) to create favorable conditions for arranging electric cars to transport visitors to the village.
“In the coming time, in addition to implementing environmental sanitation and creating ecological space, the ward will also increase investment and embellishment of the pottery village; mobilize facilities to rearrange the landscape, increase check-in points; open vocational training classes, hire artists to design new product models” – Mr. Nhat informed. In particular, in 2025, when Bui Chat Primary School in the pottery village moves to a new facility, it is expected that this place will be planned and built into a reception area, displaying Thanh Ha pottery products and tools to introduce to visitors before they visit.
In 2001, Hoi An City approved a plan to organize and exploit the Thanh Ha pottery village tourist route. At that time, the whole village had only 8 establishments with 24 workers working in the craft. In 2004, Quang Nam Provincial People's Committee approved the project to restore and develop Thanh Ha traditional craft village in association with tourism activities.
Since the Quang Nam Provincial People's Committee approved the Restoration and Development Project in 2004, Thanh Ha Pottery has become a typical craft village tourist destination in Hoi An and Quang Nam. The number of visitors has been increasing year by year. If in 2001, Thanh Ha Pottery Village only welcomed 674 visitors, with a revenue of more than 8 million VND, by 2023 it had increased to more than 550,000 visitors (about 90% of whom were international visitors), with a revenue of more than 19.2 billion VND. In the first 9 months of 2024 alone, Thanh Ha Pottery Village welcomed about 394,000 visitors who bought tickets to visit, with a revenue of nearly 14 billion VND.
Take advantage of image promotion opportunities
Thanh Ha pottery village currently has 110 households and 212 workers, mainly concentrated in 3 groups 22, 24 and 25 of Nam Dieu block, of which 37 households with 68 workers directly participate in pottery production and tourism services, with an income of 7-10 million VND (depending on the time).
Visitors to the village, in addition to being introduced to the history of the pottery village and seeing the process of creating a traditional handicraft product, are also guided by the locals to make their own products. The joy is also multiplied when at the end of the journey, each visitor will be given a ceramic figurine as a souvenir.
Ms. Nguyen Thi My Dung, Nguyen Sau Pottery Experience Center, shared that through tourism activities, many households in the village have increased their income. Currently, both Ms. Dung and her husband participate in welcoming guests. The wife molds figurines, the husband serves guests by sharpening pottery. After the experience, if visitors want to bring the product home as a souvenir, Ms. Dung charges 30,000 VND.
In addition to exploiting cultural values and craft village landscapes, organizing tours, advertising, investment promotion, transportation, business connection, product development, destination image, service infrastructure improvement, etc. play an important role in promoting Thanh Ha pottery village tourism to develop professionally and sustainably.
According to Ms. Truong Thi Ngoc Cam - Director of Hoi An City Center for Culture, Information and Communication (the unit managing Thanh Ha pottery village tourism activities), in recent years the center has implemented many synchronous solutions. In addition to promoting and introducing on mass media, the image of Thanh Ha pottery village also appears regularly in events and festivals held in Hoi An City, including bringing pottery village products to introduce at domestic and international events.
Currently, the city is developing an investment plan to upgrade infrastructure, landscape, check-in points, upgrade tour guide activities, and improve service quality. Promote communication and promote craft village products to connect with customer markets. Strengthen training for artisans and craftsmen to ensure continuity and maintain the passion of the profession without interruption.
Hoi An has joined the UNESCO creative network, including handicrafts and folk arts, so the pottery village is also one of the craft villages that need to focus on promoting and honoring its values. However, a difficult problem of Thanh Ha pottery village today is that the source of clay materials is increasingly expensive and scarce, affecting the people's professional activities, so relevant levels and sectors of the province need to find a way to remove and solve this problem."
