TRANSPORTATION INFRASTRUCTURE BREAKTHROUGH

Resolution 120/NQ-CP sets the goal that by 2050 the Mekong Delta will have a synchronously developed socio-economic infrastructure network, connected within the region and inter-regionally, ensuring harmonious, unified, complementary and non-conflicting combination with the irrigation and dike systems.

Along with other provinces in the Mekong Delta, Kien Giang is greatly affected by climate change, affecting socio-economic development. For the Mekong Delta to develop sustainably in the face of challenges from climate change, it is necessary to have a synchronous and modern infrastructure system, in which transport infrastructure is a breakthrough that is prioritized for implementation.

In addition to the Government's key transport investment projects, Kien Giang provincial leaders actively call for investment in developing technical infrastructure, attracting strategic investors, and promoting investment in key projects to create momentum for socio-economic development of the province.

The Cai Lon - Cai Be super irrigation project put into use contributes to promoting the socio-economic development of Kien Giang and the Mekong Delta region.

According to comrade Le Viet Bac - Director of the Department of Transport, in recent years, despite limited budget capital, the province has proactively launched programs and projects to mobilize priority capital for investment in transport infrastructure development projects. In the period of 2021-2025, the Provincial People's Committee mobilized 26,839 billion VND to invest in building socio-economic infrastructure.

Important connecting traffic routes have been implemented such as upgrading and renovating the Lo Te - Rach Soi expressway; upgrading and expanding provincial road 963, provincial road 966, provincial road 975B (Duong Dong - Cua Can - Ganh Dau and the branch connecting to the north - south axis of Phu Quoc island), the road along Cai Lon river (An Bien - U Minh Thuong); building 7 new bridges on provincial road 964, My Thai bridge over Rach Gia - Ha Tien canal, building 2,300km of rural roads...

Along with that, the province has invested in inland waterway infrastructure such as Ha Tien port, Nam Du port, Tho Chau port... investing in dredging important waterways to serve the needs of freight transport.

The synchronous and reasonable development of transport infrastructure creates favorable conditions for trade activities connecting with provinces in the Mekong Delta, promoting the socio-economic development in the area.

Many key projects and works to adapt to climate change have been started and put into use, helping Kien Giang to fully exploit its potential and advantages to develop agricultural production and effectively respond to climate change.

Typically, the Cai Lon - Cai Be irrigation system project phase 1 was invested and constructed by the Central Government in 2019 in the province, with a total investment of VND 3,309 billion from government bond capital.

The Cai Lon - Cai Be irrigation system was put into use to meet the requirements of agricultural development adapting to climate change, helping to control high tides, rising sea levels, reducing flooding due to land subsidence, reducing damage caused by drought and salinity in the dry season for production models in the region; creating stable and sustainable production conditions for production models according to the alternating freshwater, saline - brackish, freshwater - brackish ecosystems.

AGRICULTURAL ECONOMY IS PROGRESSING

Resolution 120/NQ-CP was issued, the Provincial Party Committee, People's Council, and People's Committee specified it through programs and plans to implement this resolution. Specifically for agricultural development, the province focused on implementing solutions to restructure the agricultural sector, shifting towards focusing on developing aquaculture and rice; building a high-tech production model; gradually reducing the area of ineffective rice production, gradually forming specialized areas for high-quality rice production linked to agricultural product consumption.

Farmers in Binh Minh commune (Vinh Thuan) harvest giant freshwater prawns.

The structure of crop and livestock varieties has been transformed reasonably. Production models have been re-planned for each sub-region. Many farming models in brackish and saltwater areas have been encouraged, bringing high efficiency such as shrimp - rice, shrimp under forest canopy, and bivalve mollusc farming.

Many high-quality rice varieties and high-yield salt-tolerant rice varieties have been successfully bred and put into mass production in coastal areas that are often affected by saltwater intrusion such as An Bien, Hon Dat, Kien Luong, etc.

Despite facing many difficulties and challenges from climate change, the province's agricultural sector has continuously grown strongly, continuing to be the pillar of the province's economy. In 2022, the province's agricultural, forestry and fishery production value reached over VND 26,020 billion, accounting for 38.27% of the province's economic structure. The average income of people from agricultural production is VND 100 million/ha/year, the average income per hectare of aquaculture water surface is over VND 130 million/ha/year.

Mr. Do Duy Nguyen - Chairman of the Board of Directors, Director of the 7A Canal Agricultural Cooperative, Thanh Dong A Commune (Tan Hiep) said: “After nearly 5 years of implementing Resolution 120/NQ-CP of the Government, the policy of natural production has gradually become effective, creating a strong change in people's awareness. Production models adapted to climate change have become effective, highly profitable, helping people increase their income and improve their lives”.
