Striker Nguyen Cong Phuong is on the list of Vietnam national team preparing for two matches against Indonesia in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Coach Troussier will announce the national team list this afternoon, March 11, ten days before the first leg match against Indonesia at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium. According to VnExpress , this list includes the name of Cong Phuong, the only Vietnamese player currently playing abroad, playing for the Yokohama Club of Japan.

Cong Phuong was once called up by coach Troussier and scored in a friendly match against Palestine at Thien Truong Stadium on September 11, 2023. However, he was later not allowed to participate in the 2023 Asian Cup due to the reason of not playing much at the club and poor physical condition. This season, Cong Phuong has not played any match for Yokohama Club.
At the end of February, Coach Troussier went to Japan to meet with Cong Phuong. He then decided to give the 29-year-old striker a chance in the context of the national team being hit by a storm of injuries, losing key striker Pham Tuan Hai due to injury.
Cong Phuong grew up from the HAGL Arsenal JMG Academy's first training course. Along with teammates Luong Xuan Truong, Nguyen Tuan Anh and Nguyen Van Toan, he was promoted by Mr. Duc to play in the V-League from the 2015 season, and has played abroad for Mito Hollyhock (Japan), Incheon (Korea), Sint Truiden (Belgium) and Yokohama (Japan).
Cong Phuong has also played for the national team at all levels, from U19 to U22, U23 and the national team. He is a mainstay of the team under coach Park Hang-seo, winning the 2018 AFF Cup.
Vietnam will visit Indonesia on March 21 and return to My Dinh Stadium to host the same opponent five days later. The results of these two matches will greatly affect Vietnam's chances of qualifying for the third qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup - Asia region and the position of head coach of Coach Troussier. The team faces great difficulties when it currently does not have the best force, with a series of injuries. Besides Tuan Hai, Que Ngoc Hai and Nguyen Tuan Anh are also definitely absent.
