"The whole team tried very hard, but our weakness is that we still don't have enough communication on the field," said coach Mai Duc Chung after the Vietnamese women's team lost to Spain with a score of 0-9. Huynh Nhu and her teammates only lost 3 goals in the first half but conceded 6 goals in the second half.
The heavy defeat against Spain was not a surprise for the Vietnamese women's team. The European team is currently ranked 6th in the FIFA rankings and has many of the world's top stars, including current Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas.
In addition to the issue of skill level, coach Mai Duc Chung pointed out a number of reasons why the Vietnamese women's team conceded 9 goals.
"Our skills are worse than the other team, and the players don't remind each other, so it's even more difficult. They're also not confident. In the second half, I boldly put players who haven't played much into the game. Actually, the second half didn't play well, but this is a test of the team's lineup," coach Mai Duc Chung explained.
The closed practice match with Spain is the last test of the Vietnamese women's team before entering the 2023 World Cup. Coach Mai Duc Chung and his team have more than a week to prepare for the first match against the US team.
“We will have to continue practicing in the rain. The weather in New Zealand is sometimes sunny, sometimes rainy, so practicing only in the sun or only in the rain will not be suitable. We will practice alternately to get used to the weather, and also need to adjust the practice time to match the match time,” said coach Mai Duc Chung.
