Coach Shin Tae-yong was unhappy after learning that his colleague Philippe Troussier quit his job right after Vietnam lost 0-3 to Indonesia on the evening of March 26.
Indonesia left Vietnam for home this afternoon, March 27. At the airport, Indonesian media questioned coach Shin Tae-yong about the news that Philippe Troussier had lost his job in the Vietnamese team. The Korean coach replied: "The atmosphere in the Indonesian team is very good, but personally I am not happy that coach Troussier was fired. The coach position is always responsible for the results."
The defeat against Indonesia left Vietnam with almost no chance of qualifying for the second round of the 2026 World Cup, which was the last straw that forced Coach Troussier to terminate his contract early, which was valid until July 2026. Previously, he failed to achieve his goal at the 32nd SEA Games when he only won a bronze medal, and was eliminated from the group stage of the 2023 Asian Cup with three losses.

On the contrary, after a difficult initial period, Coach Shin has recently been honored as a hero of Indonesian football. Public opinion in the archipelago has called on the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI) to soon extend the contract with the Korean coach, when the current contract expires after June 2024.
Coach Shin said he was unlucky in the early stages of leading Indonesia due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. Therefore, the team was not built as expected, leading to continuous defeats when facing Vietnam under coach Park Hang-seo. Since 2022, the work has been more stable and plans such as naturalizing players have been implemented to help Indonesia have a new face, while Vietnamese football has declined under coach Philippe Troussier.
Coach Shin drew two and lost two of his four matches against Vietnam under Park, but won all three matches since his opponent was coached by Mr. Troussier. With a 1-0 win in the group stage of the 2023 Asian Cup, Mr. Shin helped Indonesia defeat Vietnam for the first time since the first leg of the 2016 AFF Cup semi-finals. And after last night's 3-0 win, Indonesia defeated Vietnam at My Dinh Stadium for the first time in 20 years since the 2004 Tiger Cup (now the AFF Cup).

Coach Shin assessed that Indonesia was somewhat lucky to win big at My Dinh, while Vietnam was not weaker but just lacking connection. Meanwhile, the head of the Indonesian delegation, Mr. Sumardji, said that Indonesia was more confident, with the addition of two quality naturalized players, Thom Haye and Ragnar Oratmagoen - who scored to make it 2-0.
Indonesia is currently second in Group F of the second round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, with seven points, four more than Vietnam. The team only needs to win one more match in the last two rounds, hosting Iraq and the Philippines, in June to secure a place in the third round of the World Cup qualifiers for the first time in history.
