The dismissal of coach Shin Tae-yong by the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) came as a big surprise to the members of the Indonesian team. Although there has been no official announcement, Shin’s Korean assistants and experts are likely to lose their jobs in the near future.
The most unfortunate of these is physiotherapist Huh Ji-sub. Huh recently posted on social media lamenting his situation. Just last month, the specialist turned down an offer from his home team, South Korea, to continue staying in Indonesia to support coach Shin Tae-yong.
Coach Shin Tae-yong's assistant at risk of unemployment
"The last few days have been difficult for me. The coach was fired suddenly without any notice or plan. This decision was not only shocking but also left me feeling empty and disoriented.
Last December, I received offers from several foreign clubs and the Korean national team. However, I decided to stay in Indonesia. I want to be part of the long journey towards the dream of Indonesian football.
However, when the coach was fired, I felt like I had no role here anymore. I didn't know what to do anymore ," Huh Ji-sub shared.
The Indonesian Football Federation fired coach Shin Tae-yong on January 6, without giving a specific reason. PSSI president Erick Thohir said the Indonesian team needed a new coach who could communicate with the players better than the previous one. Indonesian media speculated that Shin Tae-yong was not liked by Indonesia's key players, who were born and raised in Europe.
Marc Klok, a former mainstay of the Indonesian national team who lost his place due to a conflict with Mr. Shin, also made a similar revelation. According to the naturalized Indonesian player of Dutch origin, the language barrier and cultural differences were the reasons why the Korean coach lost his job.
"He works in a rigid hierarchy and all communication is through interpreters. That's the problem. A lot of players come back from Holland and for them this way of working is very strange," said Marc Klok.
