"He is autocratic and thinks he is above the team," defender Marc Klok said about coach Shin Tae-yong, who was fired by the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI) after the 2024 AFF Cup. Marc Klok was once a mainstay of the archipelago team but lost his position due to a conflict with Mr. Shin.
According to the naturalized Indonesian player of Dutch origin, the language barrier and cultural differences were the reasons why the Korean coach lost his job. This problem became more serious when the Indonesian team had too many new players from Europe - people with Indonesian roots through their parents and grandparents.
Coach Shin Tae-yong was fired by the Indonesian Football Federation.
"I had a conflict with the coach. If you tried to argue with him, you would be written off. That's why I left the team. He worked in a rigid hierarchy and all communication was through an interpreter. That was the problem. A lot of players came back from Holland and for them, this way of working was very strange," Marc Klok revealed.
In the announcement of the dismissal of coach Shin Tae-yong, the Indonesian Football Federation did not give a specific reason. However, PSSI President Erick Thohir also hinted at the reason why Mr. Shin lost his job. Mr. Thohir said that the Indonesian team needed a new coach who could communicate with the players better than the old one.
The appointment of Patrick Kluivert as head coach by the Indonesian Football Federation further strengthens this hypothesis. The former famous striker of Dutch football has not made any significant mark in his coaching career.
However, he is Dutch and can of course communicate well with the players born and raised in the Netherlands in the Indonesian team. In addition, the Indonesian Football Federation also allowed Coach Kluivert to bring along assistant Denny Lanzaat - a former Dutch player of Indonesian origin, who can speak two languages fluently.
