Under the heavy rain at noon on October 21, the DB2B sand mine on the Thu Bon River revealed a strip of gold close to the riverbank. Although it belongs to Dien Tho commune, the mine is located on the other side of the river, and to cross, one must take a boat.
At noon on October 21, when we asked for directions to this sand mine, many locals said that in the past few days, people have been very excited about the news that the mine was auctioned for 370 billion VND.
“Everyone here knows about that sand mine. But no one thought the price would be so high. Since yesterday, many people have come to ask and had to stand on this side of the river to look over,” said Mr. Phan Duc Vinh, a resident of Ky Bi village, Dien Tho commune, Quang Nam province.
Responding to Tuoi Tre Online, Ms. Phan Thi Thu Suong, chairwoman of Dien Tho Commune People's Committee, said she and her fellow commune members were very surprised at the price the enterprise had agreed to pay to be granted the right to exploit the DB2B mine in the commune.
According to Ms. Suong, the company that won the auction for the DB2B sand mine is not a stranger because the leader of this unit used to live in the commune. Previously, the owner of this company traded wood from Laos to Kon Tum and then became rich.
After creating a fairly strong financial potential, the people of this enterprise moved to Da Nang, currently having a business segment in the field of wooden furniture.

Ms. Suong also said that in Dien Tho there are 2 large sand mines. The DB2B mine that was just auctioned is a mine that has been exploited. This is a sunken sand mine, located on a promontory quite far from the riverbank.
“This mine was previously granted exploitation rights to another enterprise. After the prescribed time period expired, the state reclaimed it to restore the environment.
For the past 3 years, the mine has been closed and no mining rights have been granted to anyone. Recently, when the environment has recovered and the sand source has been deposited again, the units have completed procedures to put it up for auction.
We estimated it to be around tens of billions of dong at most, but we never imagined that the company would close it at 370 billion dong.
The locality’s task is to create all conditions to promote procedures such as surveying, protecting, and supporting businesses. If the mine is put into operation, the commune will also have additional revenue to invest in local infrastructure,” said Ms. Suong.
