In 2020, after a period of research and accumulation of knowledge on the model of raising black soldier flies as feed in livestock farming, Mr. Ha invested nearly 300 million VND to renovate the mixed garden behind his house to level the ground, build a barn, buy breeding stock, and an incubator to test-raise more than 100 fighting cocks.
Initially, Mr. Ha invested about 2 million VND to buy black soldier fly eggs from Dong Nai province. Now he can produce his own breed, with enough larvae to supply his family's chicken flock.
Many union members and young people came to visit the chicken farming model of Mr. Tran Van Ha (third from right) - a union member of Ba Ly neighborhood, My Duc ward (Ha Tien city).
According to Mr. Ha, black soldier flies are easy to raise, reproduce very quickly, have very low raising costs, do not require much space on the farm and do not have a negative impact on the environment. Black soldier flies help to thoroughly treat agricultural waste, while also releasing organic matter and nutrient-rich fertilizers.
The food for black soldier flies that Mr. Ha chose is bean dregs from tofu production facilities in Ha Tien City and neighboring Cambodia. Instead of spending a lot of money on rice, paddy, and food, Mr. Ha feeds the chickens calcium worms (larvae of black soldier flies), and occasionally feeds them algae to supplement fiber.
Calcium worms are a source of protein-rich food, providing many nutrients for poultry, helping the product achieve quality and safety for human health.
Mr. Ha said: “Calcium worms are a source of food rich in nutrients, increasing resistance, reducing diseases in the process of raising chickens. Raising black soldier flies combined with raising free-range chickens brings high economic efficiency. From the closed farming model, it will contribute to reducing environmental pollution, creating a clean living environment for chickens, thereby helping chickens grow well, bringing high economic efficiency”.
Adult black soldier flies are black, 12-20mm long, with a life cycle of about 45 days, starting from eggs, larvae, pupae and adults as black soldier flies. Adult black soldier flies live about 3-5 days in the shade. Each female lays about 500-800 eggs and then dies. They do not fly away from the breeding area, do not have a sucking mouth so do not eat, do not cling to food like other flies so do not carry pathogens. |
For chicken manure, black soldier flies will process it to turn this waste into organic fertilizer for plants, thereby creating a closed cycle in livestock farming. Currently, Mr. Ha's model provides a stable income. The selling price of chicken in the garden is 120,000 VND/kg and is purchased by restaurants and eateries in Ha Tien City. After deducting expenses, Mr. Ha earns tens of millions of VND/month.
“I have been running a chicken restaurant for many years. I find that Mr. Ha’s chicken is delicious, low in fat, and has firm meat, so it is loved by customers. The chicken is delicious in dishes such as chicken and hot pot. When I run out of chicken, I always choose to buy chicken from Mr. Ha,” said Mr. Lam Xuan Tay, owner of Ty chicken restaurant, living in My Duc ward.
Recently, Ha Tien City Youth Union and My Duc Ward Youth Union have paid attention to youth start-up projects. Not only do they regularly visit and exchange information about the development of newly formed start-up projects,
The ward union also connected and proactively contacted the Transaction Office of the Social Policy Bank of Ha Tien City to support capital, helping union members and young people gain more confidence and motivation to implement their start-up ideas. Mr. Ha has just received a loan of 50 million VND from the job creation program of the Transaction Office of the City Social Policy Bank.
Party Committee member and Secretary of the My Duc Ward Youth Union, Ma Van Ngoanh, said: “After a period of monitoring, although Mr. Ha’s model has just been implemented, it has brought high economic efficiency. This result is thanks to Mr. Ha’s eagerness to learn, not being afraid of difficulties and being supported by the Ward Youth Union. From now until the end of 2023, the Ward Youth Union will organize for members to visit and learn from Mr. Ha’s model, thereby replicating the model to members in the ward.”
Although the startup journey is still difficult, with will, determination and unyielding spirit, along with a passion for clean agriculture and organic agriculture, Mr. Tran Van Ha will pursue the project to the end. By the end of 2023, Mr. Ha plans to build more barns and increase the number of chickens to several hundred according to the farm scale, gradually forming the Ha Tien clean chicken brand.
