On August 4, essential health care services in several US states were disrupted due to a cyber attack on hospital computer systems.
The data security incident occurred on August 3 at medical facilities managed by California-based Prospect Medical Holdings.
The company owns and operates 16 hospitals and more than 165 clinics and outpatient facilities in five states: California, Texas, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Pennsylvania.
The cyberattack forced some emergency rooms to close and ambulances to be diverted to other medical facilities.
Cybersecurity experts are working to resolve and investigate the incident.
Cyberattacks and cybercrime are on the rise in the United States. In an effort to strengthen cybersecurity, the White House released a new cybersecurity strategy in March, which calls for stronger regulation of current cybersecurity practices across all sectors and improved cooperation between government and the private sector.
The US government plans to expand cybersecurity requirements to critical sectors, preventing the risk of cyber attacks through military, diplomatic and law enforcement tools.
