Realizing the increasing trend of using natural products in health care, in early 2018, with the accumulated capital, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hai decided to start a big business. She and her husband invested more than 500 million VND to buy machinery, equipment, build a factory and establish Hai Loi turmeric starch production facility in residential group 5 (Vu Quang town).

Talking about the opportunity to come to this job, Ms. Hai said: “Realizing that fresh turmeric, if only used in the traditional way such as eating fresh or using normally, will not exploit its full value. Therefore, I was determined to learn and invest in deep processing to diversify products, meet consumer needs and help increase the value of fresh turmeric.”

On average, each year, Ms. Hai's facility purchases about 30 - 35 tons of fresh turmeric for people in the district and neighboring areas.

After the facility was put into stable operation, in order for the product to have a foothold and a wider consumption market, at the end of 2020, Ms. Hai registered to participate in knowledge training, prepared documents to build and develop the Hai Loi turmeric starch brand to become an OCOP product. By early 2020, through many rounds of quality assessment, the family's turmeric starch product had achieved 3-star OCOP certification.

The fact that Hai Loi turmeric starch products meet OCOP standards has helped Ms. Hai's and her husband's facility access large markets and stabilize output. If previously, the product was only sold in the province, now it is available in many places such as: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Can Tho... It is known that on average, each year, Ms. Hai's facility purchases about 30 - 35 tons of fresh turmeric for people in the district and neighboring areas.

Every year, Ms. Hai's facility earns more than 700 million VND in revenue, after deducting expenses, it brings in more than 300 million VND in revenue.

According to Ms. Hai, the process of producing turmeric starch is nothing special but requires perseverance and meticulousness. For each batch of powder, the maker must carefully select the ingredients, process them thoroughly and extract them to ensure the correct ratio and process.

After washing the fresh turmeric, the skin is scraped off and put into a blender, the pulp is separated for about 10 minutes and then put into a filter system to remove impurities. After letting the turmeric powder settle for about 7 - 8 hours, it is filtered many more times to remove impurities, especially turmeric oil. Next, the batches of turmeric will be put into a cold dryer for about 3 - 5 days (temperature 19 - 20 degrees Celsius) so that the turmeric starch dries slowly while still ensuring the characteristic flavor and inherent nutrients.

Ms. Hai said: "On average, the facility produces 25 kg of pure turmeric starch per day (from 500 kg of fresh turmeric). Each year, the facility produces about 1.6 tons of turmeric starch with a revenue of more than 700 million VND, after deducting expenses, it brings in a revenue of more than 300 million VND. In addition to increasing family income, my facility also creates stable jobs for 4 workers with an income of 6 million VND/person/month".

Ms. Hai participated in the OCOP market on Ha Tinh television to expand the market.

Not only getting rich from producing turmeric starch, from purchasing turmeric in the area, Ms. Hai also contributed to making turmeric a commercial crop for farmers in the communes of Tho Dien, Huong Minh, Vu Quang town...

Ms. Nguyen Thi Linh (residential group 5, Vu Quang town) shared: “Previously, turmeric plants often grew naturally mixed with other crops in the garden. Since 2019, turmeric plants have been purchased sustainably by Hai Loi turmeric starch processing facility, so I focus on commodity production. Currently, in my family's garden, more than 1 hectare of turmeric has been cultivated, with a purchase price of 10,000 VND/kg, each year turmeric plants bring in a revenue of over 25 million VND".

Currently, many people in the area intercrop turmeric between fruit orchards to keep the soil loose and increase income. This is also a sustainable direction, so hopefully in the future, Hai Loi turmeric starch production facility will have a sustainable connection to promote people in the area as well as neighboring areas to expand the area, contributing to increasing income and stabilizing life.
