A business consumes over 3,000 tons of fresh turmeric each year.

In the One Commune One Product Program, Hung Yen province has built many unique, high-quality, and "hard to find" models, typically longan, white lotus seeds, egg lychee, turmeric powder, Dong Tao chicken ham... These specialties are only produced in Hung Yen on a traditional craft village scale, with hundreds of tons or more sold to the market each year. The 4-star turmeric powder OCOP product of Hoang Minh Chau Company Limited in Chi Tan Commune (Khoai Chau District) is one of the typical products.

Mr. Hoang Quang Dong, Director of Hoang Minh Chau Company Limited, said that turmeric has been grown in Chi Tan commune for a long time, but only since 2000 has it been deeply processed, creating products with high commodity value. Processed turmeric products for sale to consumers as cooking spices have also helped increase the value of turmeric cultivation by 3-5 times compared to selling fresh turmeric products.

Not satisfied with the income from turmeric, Mr. Dong researched and found that turmeric not only has food value but also medicinal value, helping to reduce symptoms of stomach and duodenal ulcers, anti-aging, increase immunity, enhance resistance and prevent cancer in humans... Accordingly, Mr. Dong boldly borrowed capital to invest in electrical machinery, processed fresh turmeric products into starch and sent them to pharmacies for sale. Unexpectedly, Mr. Dong's turmeric starch was enthusiastically welcomed by many consumers, and as soon as the product was made, traders placed orders for it.

Excited with the initial success, Mr. Dong decided to take the plunge, hire workers, and establish Hoang Minh Chau Company Limited (the Company) to expand production scale, introduce turmeric starch at several international trade fairs, and also sign regular purchase contracts with Middle Eastern countries, China, and India.

Mr. Dong’s effective approach has created a movement to grow and process turmeric powder widely in all localities in the country. But that is when he has to face a difficult choice, either consider it over or continue to regain production momentum because the Company’s market share of turmeric powder is fiercely competed with similar products from other localities.

While wanting to restore production but not knowing where to start, Mr. Dong was supported by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Hung Yen to plan a turmeric production area according to the GACP-WHO process (cultivation and harvesting process according to the regulations of the World Health Organization) and supported to participate in trade fairs in Hanoi, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Thai Nguyen, Ninh Binh. In addition, he also helped promote turmeric powder on e-commerce platforms voso.vn, shopee.vn, postmart.vn and on the website http//ocophungyen.vn; http//ketnoiocop.vn.

Thanks to that, Mr. Dong continued to invest in more high-tech processing machinery lines, extracting special quality turmeric powder lines that are very difficult to "cope" with such as Curcumin, Nano Curcumin, Nano Curcumin milk and turmeric cream. Combined with actively promoting and introducing products in a number of international markets, Mr. Dong's company has gradually restored production, expanded official export of turmeric powder to demanding consumer countries such as Japan and the EU. At the same time, it has attracted the trust of millions of domestic people, established a significant position in the Vietnamese pharmaceutical industry, and received stable contracts from supermarkets Big C, Aeon, Vimart...

Currently, each year the Company cooperates with local farmers in production, consuming over 3,000 tons of fresh turmeric of all kinds, creating jobs and stable income for 10-15 local workers, contributing to maintaining stable production of 400 hectares of turmeric in Khoai Chau district and increasing the agricultural production value of Chi Tan commune to 800 million VND/ha of cultivation/year.

Mr. Le Van Thang, Head of the Hung Yen Rural Development Department, assessed that Mr. Hoang Quang Dong is a very dynamic farmer, daring to think, daring to do and knowing how to increase the value of the product. Up to now, all types of turmeric powder produced by Hoang Minh Chau Company Limited have been recognized by the Provincial People's Committee as achieving 4-star OCOP in 2019. "We are currently coordinating with relevant units to appraise and propose granting 5-star OCOP certification for the Company's products," said Mr. Thang.

According to scientists, turmeric grown in Chi Tan has the highest medicinal properties in the country because the cultivated soil contains many rare and irreplaceable trace elements. There is also a difference between turmeric starch and Curcumin. To produce 1kg of turmeric starch or 0.2g of Curcumin, over 30kg of good quality fresh turmeric must be processed. To produce Nano Curcum, a much higher amount of fresh turmeric is needed. When drinking Curcumin, the body will absorb the medicinal properties of turmeric much better than turmeric starch. In particular, the human body will absorb all the medicinal properties of turmeric when using Nano Curcumin because this product is refined in molecular form, allowing direct transmission through the bloodstream.
