After the Phong Chau bridge collapse, not only did people's travel to work become dozens of times farther, the trade of goods between the two districts was affected, but it also caused many obstacles to students' studies.

419 students affected

According to preliminary statistics from the Department of Education and Training of Phu Tho province, 419 students from Hung Hoa, My Van, Tam Nong High Schools (Tam Nong district); Long Chau Sa, Lam Thao (Lam Thao district); Tam Nong District Continuing Education and Vocational Training Center, Lam Thao District Continuing Education and Vocational Training Center were affected in going to school due to the collapse of Phong Chau bridge.

In order to create favorable conditions for these more than 400 students to study conveniently during the time of overcoming the collapse of Phong Chau bridge, the Department of Education and Training of Phu Tho province requested the Department of Education and Training of Lam Thao, Tam Nong, and Cam Khe to direct kindergartens, primary schools, and secondary schools in the area to review and grasp the number of children and students going to school every day via Phong Chau and Tu My bridges.

The collapse of Phong Chau bridge has made studying difficult for students.

Accordingly, 52 students studying at high schools and the Continuing Education Center of Lam Thao district will be temporarily sent to study at schools in Tam Nong district.

The remaining 367 students studying at Tam Nong High School and Continuing Education Center will temporarily study at schools in Lam Thao district.

Phu Tho Department of Education and Training also requested that after the temporary bridge to replace Phong Chau bridge and the opening of Trung Ha and Tu My bridges, educational institutions hand over students and their learning and training results to their old schools.

At the same time, educational institutions develop and implement plans for testing, remedial teaching, and knowledge consolidation for students of the unit after the temporary study period...

Stabilize students' learning situation

Speaking with PNVN Newspaper, Ms. Bui Thi Thanh Ha (Vice Principal of Tam Nong High School) emphasized that the Phong Chau bridge collapse greatly affected the learning of students at the school.

Ms. Ha added that Tam Nong High School has a total of 1,100 students. Of these, 430 students are living in Lam Thao district. After Phong Chau bridge collapsed, it was difficult to travel to school, so more than 200 students studying at the school registered to study at schools in Lam Thao district. However, the number of these students gradually decreased.

According to statistics as of September 19, there are 170 students from Tam Nong High School who are studying at Long Chau Sa High School in Lam Thao District. Of these, there are 117 students in grade 10; 40 students in grade 11 and 13 students in grade 12. All of these students live in Lam Thao District but study at Tam Nong High School.

In the opposite direction, Tam Nong High School also received 27 students (10 grade 10 students; 5 grade 11 students and 12 grade 12 students) from Lam Thao High School (26 students) and Hien Da High School (1 student).

"On the morning of September 9, while students were in the third period, they heard about the collapse of Phong Chau bridge. Immediately, the school held a meeting with teachers and agreed on a plan to keep all 430 students at school for lunch that day, and the school would buy them lunch, except for cases where parents came to pick them up directly.

After reaching an agreement, there are 3 options chosen by parents of students living in Lam Thao: students will travel between the 2 districts by free student shuttle bus; stay at the house of friends in the class or stay at the house of nearby residents who provide free accommodation," Ms. Ha informed.

In the first days, most of the students chose to stay at their friends’ houses. Ms. Ha said that there were classes with 45 students, but up to 30 students lived in Lam Thao district. However, due to the unexpected incident, these students all split up to stay at the houses of the remaining 15 friends in Tam Nong district for convenience in studying.

In the following days, when the parents and students were in a stable mood, many parents chose to take their children back and forth by free shuttle bus. In cases where children got carsick and could not travel by car, they were forced to stay at friends’ or relatives’ houses or at people who provided free accommodation.

"The schools also create conditions to try to minimize the procedures for sending students to help them stabilize their studies soon. After the first days, currently, the two schools still regularly update the number and situation of students.

Long Chau Sa High School regularly takes attendance, and if any student is absent, it will be reported to Tam Nong High School. Teachers at Tam Nong will be responsible for informing the homeroom teacher to find out the reason," Ms. Ha shared and added that recently, students have basically attended school regularly and there have been no problems.

In addition to those advantages, the Vice Principal of Tam Nong District High School said that sending students to study abroad will cause a sudden increase in the number of students, leading to many difficulties in teaching and learning. He gave an example: Long Chau Sa High School received 117 students from grade 10 but could not open new classes, so these students were forced to study in existing classes. The large number of students caused difficulties for students to study as well as difficulties in testing and evaluating student quality.

Exchange teachers between schools

Faced with current difficulties, Ms. Ha said that in addition to exchanging students, schools should also exchange teachers to reduce travel distance. "Tam Nong High School has 11 teachers living in Lam Thao district. Currently, there are 2 teachers who are being reinforced to teach at Long Chau Sa High School. These teachers have both teaching duties and the responsibility of managing the students the school sends to study there. Meanwhile, there are cases where teachers live in Lam Thao but their maternal home is in Tam Nong or their siblings live in Tam Nong, so the teachers stay at their relatives' houses and continue to teach in Tam Nong," Ms. Ha shared.

For 12th graders, changing their learning environment, teachers, and friends can affect their final year learning spirit. Ms. Ha said that this is possible because currently they only study compulsory subjects and elective subjects are temporarily suspended. However, Ms. Ha also emphasized that in the near future, when travel is resolved, the school will focus on reviewing knowledge for students.

For students renting a room, Tam Nong High School also requires homeroom teachers to report the number, name, hometown, contact number of relatives of students who are renting a room, what type of room they are renting, and to know everything to manage the students.

Phong Chau Bridge was built and put into operation in 1995, connecting Tam Nong and Lam Thao districts of Phu Tho province, with a very heavy daily traffic volume.

According to information from the Department of Transport of Phu Tho province, at around 10am on September 9, the Red River rose high and its rapid flow caused two spans of the bridge to collapse.

Through camera footage, authorities initially determined that 10 cars, 2 motorbikes and 13 people were missing.
