Historically, Au Lau wharf had an important position, connecting the Viet Bac and Tay Bac transportation systems, and was the only place that could lift heavy weapons such as ground artillery, anti-aircraft artillery, ammunition trucks, military equipment, etc. across the river to supply the battlefield.

During the 9 years of resistance against French colonialism (1946-1954), Au Lau wharf was the gateway to the Northwest and was identified as an extremely important weapons transportation point for the battlefield during the resistance years. At night, activities mainly took place at Au Lau wharf to avoid enemy detection, ferries crossed back and forth as quickly as possible to clear the way for reinforcements.

To prevent sabotage by enemy aircraft, during the day we had to pull the ferry upstream to Ngoi Lau to sink the ferry, and at night we had to bail out the water to pull the ferry out. After hundreds of days and nights of preparing for the campaign, the labor force and workers at Au Lau wharf made great efforts to ensure smooth traffic…

During this time, Au Lau wharf was strengthened in both facilities and human resources to withstand the bombings while still transporting weapons, ammunition, food, medicine and people across the Red River to participate in the Ly Thuong Kiet Campaign (1951), the Northwest Campaign, the liberation of Nghia Lo (1952) and the climax was the historic Dien Bien Phu Victory on May 7, 1954, contributing to the successful end of the resistance war against the French of the Vietnamese people...

After serving the Dien Bien Phu campaign, from 1955 to 1965, Au Lau wharf was upgraded from a wooden ferry to a steel ferry with a canoe tow. From 1965 to 1968, with the spirit of "Living on the road and bridge, dying bravely and steadfastly", the wharf had 100 trips to transport 500 vehicles across the river, transporting nearly 200,000 cars and thousands of tons of goods back and forth.

During the years of fighting against the destructive war of the American imperialists, Au Lau wharf endured many bombs and bullets from the enemy but still regularly transported people and goods to serve the front line, to the "beloved South". Au Lau wharf contributed to the whole country to make the great victory in the spring of 1975, liberating the South, unifying the Fatherland...

After the country was unified, Au Lau wharf continued to operate and became a key unit of the transportation sector of Yen Bai province. On December 30, 1992, Yen Bai bridge was inaugurated and put into operation, marking the end of Au Lau wharf's mission after nearly 60 years of continuous operation. Due to the significance and historical value of Au Lau wharf, Yen Bai province built the monument "Historical Au Lau wharf" in today's Hong Ha ward, at the intersection near the wharf.

The monument is a symbol of the spirit of those who fought and sacrificed to regain independence and freedom for the Fatherland. With the achievements recorded during the heroic years of the nation's resistance, on August 7, 2012, Au Lau Wharf was recognized as a National Historical Relic by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism under Decision No. 3027/QD-BVHTTDL...

Mr. Pham Van Xien, 97 years old, a 2/4th class disabled veteran, residing at 14 Nguyen Khac Nhu Street, Hong Ha Ward, Yen Bai City, shared: "I myself participated in both the resistance wars against the French and the Americans, and was wounded in the historic Dien Bien Phu Campaign... We soldiers clearly understand that the vital traffic routes play a vital role for our army. Because with roads, there are troops and necessities to serve the battlefield. Au Lau Wharf plays a very important role, contributing significantly to the victory of our army and people"...

Over time, Ben Au Lau Historical Site has always promoted its historical values, and is a place often chosen by schools to bring students to visit to educate traditions, arouse love for the homeland and country for the young generation, arouse national pride, the heroic revolutionary fighting tradition of generations of fathers and grandfathers who won and maintained the country's independence. Inheriting and promoting the heroic tradition of the homeland, the Party Committee, government and people of all ethnic groups in Yen Bai province continue to promote the strength of solidarity, successfully carry out two strategic tasks of building and defending the Fatherland; actively exploit potentials and strengths, effectively use resources to develop the local socio-economy...
