With 130/150 points, Nguyen Duy Phong, a 12A5 student at Chuong My A High School (Chuong My district, Hanoi), surpassed more than 30,000 candidates to lead the Hanoi National University's capacity assessment exam after 2 rounds of exams this year (HSA exam), and surpassed the valedictorian of last year's exam by 1 point.

Previously, in the second round of the Hanoi University of Science and Technology's thinking assessment exam in 2025 (TSA exam), Duy Phong also excelled, achieving 90.54 points, in the top 4 candidates with the highest scores in the exam.

"When I finished the assessment test and found out that I got 130/150 points, I felt very happy and surprised, I didn't think I did so well on the test. Before that, the highest score I got in practice was around 110," Phong shared.

Accordingly, Phong scored 48/50 points in the math and data processing section, and 44/50 in the language and literature section. In the optional section, the male student chose science (physics, chemistry, biology) and scored 38/50 points.

Phong said that "psychology" is an important factor that helps male students complete the exam well. During the exam, the male student strategized to do the easy questions first, and saved the difficult questions for last.

"This gives me enough time to think about difficult questions thoroughly," Phong said.

Phong said that during the review process for the competency assessment exam, the male student realized that he had a solid grasp of the 12th grade math knowledge, while some parts of the 10th and 11th grade math were not good. Therefore, he focused on reviewing the weak parts.

In the literature subject, Phong felt that he did quite well in the cluster questions and paragraph questions during his preparation. However, he did not do well in the true-false and different word classes questions, despite trying his best.

"Luckily, in the exam room, I encountered quite easy questions in the literature section," Phong said, adding that this was also the section where he scored the highest compared to when he practiced.

For the science exam, Phong chose physics, chemistry, and biology. According to Phong, because he studied block A00 (math, physics, chemistry), his knowledge of math and physics was already good, so he only focused on reviewing for the biology exam.

Study for 2 separate exams at the same time

Duy Phong said he started studying for the Hanoi National University's aptitude test and the Hanoi University of Science and Technology's thinking test from January 2025. He did not study at any center or buy practice tests, but studied in groups with his classmates. The better students would help the weaker students.

"My class is divided into two groups to review for the competency assessment test. I am in the biology review group. In the class, there are two students who are taking the city-level biology exam and will support the students in the group to study and practice the questions," Phong said.

For math, physics, and chemistry, Phong said that his homeroom teacher and other subject teachers organized free tutoring sessions at school so that students could practice: "The amount of questions given in class by the teachers is enough, so I don't need to take extra classes at the center."

To maintain stable health and good spirit, Phong maintains the habit of not studying past 11pm. In the days before the exam, the male student always keeps a relaxed spirit and does not cram revision into the last days.

It is known that in grade 9, Phong won second prize in the city-level excellent student competition in English; in grade 10, Phong took the excellent student competition in chemistry and won first prize in the cluster with a perfect score of 20/20.

In the coming time, Phong will continue to focus on reviewing for the high school graduation exam. He plans to apply for the automation major at Hanoi University of Science and Technology.

Self-study helps students achieve outstanding results

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Truong - Principal of Chuong My A High School, said he was very happy and proud that up to now, the school has had students with the highest scores in the Hanoi National University's competency assessment exam for two consecutive years.

Before Duy Phong, in 2024, Nguyen Mai Truc, class 12A5, Chuong My A High School, was one of two candidates who scored 129/150 points, the highest in the Hanoi National University's competency assessment exam.

"Thanks to the dedicated teaching of teachers in class, the encouragement and support of parents and the self-study guidance of the school, the students have achieved outstanding results in exams.

In the coming time, the school will continue to promote self-study movements and expand the model of supporting students in self-study," said Mr. Truong.
