On the morning of September 27, at the Tuoi Tre newspaper office, authorized and assigned by the leaders of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union Ngo Minh Hai awarded a certificate of merit from the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee to Prof. Dr. Le Ngoc Thach - a guest lecturer at the University of Natural Sciences (Ho Chi Minh City National University).

Regret when receiving the certificate

Still wearing the same faded clothes as the day Professor Le Ngoc Thach brought a savings book of 1 billion VND to the Tuoi Tre newspaper office, but this time he was not as confident as the time he sent his heart to the people of the North.

Receiving the certificate of merit from the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, Professor Le Ngoc Thach could not hide his confusion. He said he was only used to teaching about chemical reactions, and did not know what to say when his heart was recognized and praised.

“I honestly felt very guilty when I heard that I received a certificate of merit from the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee. I think what I did was just the duty of an ordinary citizen in Vietnam,” he confided.

He said he was not proud of contributing 1 billion VND, if anything, he would only consider himself to have contributed to the legitimacy of the country's sustainable development.

“1 billion VND may be a lot of money for those who earn it through real effort, but with the severe damage that natural disasters have caused to our compatriots in the North, as I said, 1 billion VND means nothing, just a grain of sand!”, he said emotionally.

Mr. Thach said he was from Vinh Long and had no relatives in the North, but the damage caused by storms and floods was the damage of his compatriots.

“Professors and doctors say that is just a matter of words with colleagues and students. As for the North, I am a child of a big Vietnamese family. So I always try to help my family with whatever I can within my ability,” the 76-year-old professor choked up.

He did not talk about his own contribution, but only thanked the leaders of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, the City Youth Union and Tuoi Tre newspaper for being the bridge that helped him transfer his "grain of sand" to the North.

He hopes that Tuoi Tre newspaper will calculate and effectively use the kindness of him and many readers, to help the people of the North soon overcome the consequences of natural disasters.

“Especially when the wind has stopped blowing and the water has stopped rising, but people still have many difficulties, I hope you will be able to support their needs,” he said.

Mr. Thach's story ends today but will still be remembered as a noble act of "national love and compatriotism".

Typical actions of Ho Chi Minh City's charity

Mr. Ngo Minh Hai - Secretary of Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union - authorized and assigned by the leaders of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee to present a certificate of merit to Prof. Dr. Le Ngoc Thach.

Mr. Hai said that Mr. Thach's action was a noble gesture, spreading to the city's people and creating great inspiration to unite people together in difficult days.

“And that is also a typical image of the characteristic of the humanity of the people of Ho Chi Minh City in particular and the whole country in general. Regardless of their position, they always contribute and share with their fellow countrymen in distress,” Mr. Hai shared.

Through the noble actions of Mr. Thach, the Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union also hopes to create trust for individuals and units contributing to the activities of the Youth Union and Tuoi Tre newspaper.

On behalf of the City Youth Union and the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, Mr. Hai expressed his thanks and hoped that Prof. Dr. Le Ngoc Thach would continue to pay attention, contribute and give opinions to the general activities of Tuoi Tre newspaper in particular and Ho Chi Minh City in general.

At the ceremony, journalist Le Xuan Trung - deputy editor-in-chief of Tuoi Tre newspaper - said that the trust of Professor Dr. Le Ngoc Thach was a great joy for the newspaper and also partly explained why Tuoi Tre received thousands of contributions from readers with a total amount of more than 21 billion VND.

Mr. Le Xuan Trung said: “ Tuoi Tre Newspaper has designed two programs, the first is a media program on the newspaper to quickly bring information and images of people in flood-hit areas to readers nationwide. The second program is to rebuild areas severely damaged by storms and floods.

The successful implementation of both programs in parallel is thanks to the trust and authorization of many readers, especially of Professor, Dr. Le Ngoc Thach.

According to Mr. Trung, Tuoi Tre newspaper is currently designing many reconstruction projects, coordinating with agencies, departments and localities to effectively use readers' contributions for flood victims, in addition to emergency relief.

Specifically, focus on supporting and rebuilding schools, helping teachers and students return to school soon.

On this occasion, on behalf of the editorial board of Tuoi Tre newspaper, journalist Le Xuan Trung would like to thank the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee for promptly recognizing and praising Professor Dr. Le Ngoc Thach as well as the city's people for joining hands to support the North, which is suffering the consequences of natural disasters and floods.
