Director of Department of Information and Communications talks about the situation of taking advantage of the name of the press for personal gain

Director of the Department of Information and Communications of Ha Tinh, Dau Tung Lam, "spoke up" to answer questions from provincial People's Council delegates about the situation of some reporters taking advantage of the press for personal gain.

At the 17th Session, the Provincial People's Council delegates questioned Director of the Department of Information and Communications Dau Tung Lam on the following content: Recently, the Provincial Police have successfully solved cases of some people taking advantage of the name of the press to profit and obstruct the operations of enterprises. Did the Information and Communications sector have information about this issue before? Currently, are there still journalists and collaborators in Ha Tinh who have not fulfilled their principles and purposes well? Please let the sector know about management solutions in the coming time?"

Mr. Dau Tung Lam informed: Recently, the provincial police have solved cases of some people taking advantage of the name of the press for personal gain. Most recently, on November 27, 2023, the Investigation Police Agency of Ha Tinh Provincial Police initiated a case, prosecuted the accused, and arrested 3 subjects for the crime of "Taking advantage of influence over people with positions and powers for personal gain" according to Clause 2, Article 366, Penal Code.

It can be affirmed that in the past time, the Criminal Police Department of Ha Tinh Provincial Police and the specialized department of the Department of Information and Communications have regularly coordinated to provide and share information, especially coordinating to verify information reflected by people and businesses related to a number of subjects claiming to be press reporters to make things difficult, affecting the operations of businesses in the area. The cases prosecuted on November 27, 2023 are among the cases on the list of information exchanges between the two sides.

According to the Criminal Police Department of Ha Tinh Police, the Investigation Police Agency has just prosecuted 3 subjects for the crime of "Taking advantage of influence over people with positions and powers for personal gain". Specifically, these are subjects who take advantage of the name of the press for personal gain, led by Le Danh Tao (57 years old).

Clarifying the issues of concern to delegates and voters, the Director of the Department of Information and Communications of Ha Tinh said: There are currently 10 representative offices and 39 resident reporters in the area, with 67 reporters having press cards; more than 20 magazine establishments use collaborators but have not yet set up representative offices or assigned resident reporters in the area. The representative offices and resident offices operate basically in accordance with the propaganda orientations and legal regulations on press activities, effectively coordinating with agencies, units and localities in propaganda work.

However, there are still some cases that have not properly implemented the principles and purposes. Therefore, in 2022, the Department of Information and Communications has sanctioned 3 cases of press activities that are not in accordance with the principles and purposes stated in the press operation license of the press agency where they are working.

To rectify cases of taking advantage of the press to profit, hindering business operations, the Director of the Department of Information and Communications of Ha Tinh affirmed: In the coming time, the Provincial People's Committee will continue to direct the Department of Information and Communications to continue to review, remind, and handle; for cases of problems in the process of determining the principles and purposes between articles and operating licenses, coordinate with the competent agencies of the Ministry of Information and Communications to handle. Effectively implement Action Program No. 14-Ctr/TU dated August 4, 2022 of the Provincial Party Standing Committee on implementing Plan No. 156-KH/BTGTW, dated June 14, 2022 of the Central Propaganda Department on "Strengthening the direction, management, and rectification of newspaper, magazine, electronic information page, and social network activities in the current period".

In addition, Ha Tinh will also focus on improving the effectiveness of coordination between the Department of Information and Communications and the Provincial Party Committee's Propaganda Department, the Provincial Police, and the Provincial Journalists Association in state management of the press; continue to improve the effectiveness of state management of the press, electronic information pages, and general electronic information pages; organize inspections and reviews of the implementation of the principles and purposes of representative offices and resident reporters; review and rectify the implementation of the work of speaking and providing information to the press; promote inspection, examination, and handling of violations in press activities, publishing, printing, and distribution; focus on promptly handling complaints and denunciations about information reflected by the press.

Emphasizing this content, Provincial Party Secretary - Chairman of the Provincial People's Council Hoang Trung Dung also pointed out the fact that there are still some collaborators and reporters taking advantage of the name of the press for personal gain; some Facebookers post untrue content online, causing discontent in society. In the face of this situation, the provincial leader requested the Department of Information and Communications to pay attention, coordinate with relevant forces to promptly handle and have thorough management solutions.
