Responding to the 16 Days of Action to End Gender-Based Violence Global Campaign 2024 with the theme “Towards 30 Years of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action: Unite to End Violence Against Women” as well as the National Action Month on Gender Equality and Prevention and Response to Gender-Based Violence from November 15 to December 15, with the theme “Ensuring social security, empowering and creating opportunities for women and girls to achieve gender equality and eliminate gender-based violence”, the 3rd “Run for a Vietnam without violence against women and girls” will be held at Tran Nhan Tong walking street, Thien Quang Lake, Hanoi on December 8.

The Run is a popular and accessible sport activity that celebrates the mission of a happy and violence-free life for women and girls - who are disproportionately affected by gender-based violence.

This year, the race is expected to attract around 2,000 runners of all ages, genders and abilities, each demonstrating their commitment to ensuring a future free of violence against women and girls in Vietnam. Runners will choose between two stages, called “Love” (2.5km) and “Companion” (5km), highlighting solidarity and a common message of respecting women and girls, and breaking the silence to end violence.

This is the third time the race has been organized after the successes of 2022 and 2023, organized by the Center for Research and Applied Sciences on Gender - Family - Women and Adolescents (CSAGA), with technical and financial support from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Vietnam and the Australian government.

The Run promotes inclusivity by encouraging and supporting the participation of vulnerable groups including people with disabilities, the LGBTIQ+ community, children and young people, creating an opportunity for everyone to unite towards a future without violence against women and girls in Vietnam.

In addition to the invaluable support from organizations such as UNFPA in Vietnam and the Australian Government over the years - this year's race welcomes many stakeholders, including embassies, international organizations, private organizations and many individuals. This spirit of diverse cooperation underscores the shared commitment to ending violence against women and girls.

More than just a regular race, the event also aims to become a "Festival of Love and Happiness", providing great opportunities for participants to raise awareness, share messages of respect for women and girls, and together break the silence to end violence.

To participate in the race, you can register before November 19.

Held for the first time in 2022, the “Run for a Vietnam without violence against women and girls” is an idea to attract public attention and encourage the community to participate in a positive sporting event with a meaningful message about respecting and protecting women and girls.

In 2022, the race attracted 450 participants. In 2023, the event returned with even greater success, attracting 1,700 participants, including a diverse presence of many different representatives from the community such as: youth, people with disabilities, representatives from civil society organizations, diplomatic agencies and United Nations (UN) agencies in Vietnam working in areas related to promoting gender equality and protecting women and girls.

The 2024 Race offers free entry to vulnerable groups and priority beneficiaries of the program (including people with disabilities, the LGBTIQ+ community, children and young people). In addition, to expand the participation and spread the positive message of the Race, the organizers call for contributions from participants to pay for the cost of the Race Kit including T-shirt, BIB and medal when participating in the Race. This fee is only for the production of the Kit and is not for profit.

According to the 2019 National Survey on Violence Against Women in Viet Nam conducted by the General Statistics Office and the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs with technical and financial support from UNFPA and the Australian Government, two in three women (62.9%) have experienced physical, sexual, emotional and/or economic violence by their husbands in their lifetime.

In addition, the majority of women (90.4%) who experienced physical and/or sexual violence by a husband/partner did not seek help from formal services or authorities, and half of them never told anyone about their violence. Gender-based violence costs Vietnam 1.8% of its GDP each year.

UNFPA is the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency. Its mission is “to create a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person’s potential is fulfilled.”

In 2018, UNFPA launched strategic efforts to achieve three transformative outcomes and ambitions that promise to change the world for every woman, man and young person: zero preventable maternal deaths, zero unmet need for family planning, zero gender-based violence and zero harmful practices such as child marriage and gender-biased sex selection. These are at the core of UNFPA’s new Strategic Plan, which was endorsed by the UNFPA Executive Board in September 2021.

The Center for Research and Applied Sciences on Gender, Family, Women and Adolescents (CSAGA) was established in 2001, operating with the mission of supporting and inspiring women and girls towards a happy life, free from gender-based violence. Using creative methods, combining art and entertainment activities, sports to convey positive messages and promote good values, awakening the light within each person is the approach that CSAGA strives to pursue in activities for gender equality and prevention and response to gender-based violence.

Since its establishment, CSAGA has supported and accompanied tens of thousands of women who have suffered violence, carried out hundreds of communication initiatives and creative activities on this topic, including activities in response to the “National Action Month for Gender Equality and Prevention and Response to Gender-Based Violence” over the past years.
