Germany: 66-year-old mother shocks with birth of 10th child, confirms natural pregnancy

Despite doubts from the medical community, a 66-year-old German woman claims to have conceived naturally and given birth to her 10th healthy child, causing a stir in public opinion.

According to NBC News on March 27, a woman in Germany shocked everyone when she was able to naturally conceive and successfully give birth to her 10th child at the age of 66.

Alexandra Hildebrandt, director of a museum in Berlin, gave birth to a healthy baby boy named Philipp by caesarean section on March 19 at the Charité Hospital in Berlin. The baby weighed 3.54 kg.

“A large family is not only wonderful, but above all, it is the foundation for raising children properly,” Hildebrandt shared.

Hildebrandt's previous children had quite a large age difference, respectively Svitlana (46 years old), Artiom (36 years old), Elisabeth and Maximilian (12 years old), Alexandra (10 years old), Leopold (8 years old), Anna (7 years old), Maria (4 years old) and Katharina (2 years old).

She said she became pregnant naturally without in vitro fertilization (IVF) or fertility drugs.

In an interview with German newspaper Bild , she revealed that she has never used contraception, does not smoke or drink alcohol, and always maintains an active lifestyle.

“I eat very healthily, swim for an hour every day and walk for two hours,” she said.

When asked if her family and friends expressed concerns about her pregnancy at this age, Hildebrandt said she received only congratulations and positive reactions from them.

Mrs Hildebrandt's obstetrician, Wolfgang Henrich, confirmed that her pregnancy was "almost uncomplicated".

With experience in monitoring more than 10 pregnancies in women over 50 years old since 1990, Mr. Henrich said Mrs. Hildebrandt's case is not unique.

But he also warned that older mothers, especially those who have had multiple caesarean sections like Hildebrandt, are at higher risk of complications such as high blood pressure, heart problems and premature birth.

Still, some experts remain skeptical. Dr. Brian Levine, a reproductive endocrinologist and co-founder of the CCRM New York fertility clinic, doubts the chances of a 66-year-old woman getting pregnant naturally are "extremely low."

While pregnancy at 66 is rare, Hildebrandt is not the oldest mother to give birth. In 2023, a 70-year-old Ugandan woman, Safina Namukwaya, gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl, using in vitro fertilization using donated eggs and her husband's sperm.

"Many people may think 70 is old, but God has decided that I will have children at this age," Ms. Namukwaya shared with TODAY newspaper.
