Great value from plastic recycling actions in Vietnam

Thời ĐạiThời Đại19/11/2024

In the context of increasingly serious plastic waste pollution globally, Vietnam is gradually asserting its role in solving this problem through plastic recycling initiatives. From small actions of individuals to long-term strategies of large enterprises, the whole society is gradually forming a sustainable mindset, creating value for the environment, economy and community. Vietnamese enterprises are pioneers in recycling and sustainable development

In recent years, businesses in Vietnam have taken important steps to promote plastic recycling and build a circular economy. For example, Unilever Vietnam has cooperated with DUYTAN Recycling, both aiming to collect and recycle 30,000 tons of plastic waste from 2023 to 2027. In addition, they have also implemented programs to raise awareness about waste classification at source. Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Van - General Director of Unilever Vietnam said that from the product packaging design stage, the company has calculated to increase the ability to recycle. To date, 64% of Unilever Vietnam's packaging is recyclable.

No less prominent, Coca‑Cola Vietnam is constantly making efforts in its journey to protect the environment with the impressive program “Recycled plastic bottles, the journey continues”. This program is implemented together with DUYTAN Recycling Plastic Company and VECA technology collection application, marking Coca‑Cola’s strong step in building a zero-waste future. Together with strategic partners, Coca‑Cola is testing innovative solutions, contributing to promoting the circular economy model for PET plastic bottles in Vietnam.

Challenges and opportunities in the recycling journey

Despite progress, the journey of plastic recycling in Vietnam still faces many difficulties. According to statistics, the country consumes more than 3.9 million tons of plastic each year, but only about 33% of this is recycled. The main reason lies in the unsynchronized waste collection system and the limited awareness of people about waste classification.

However, the government has taken strong steps to improve the situation. The 2020 Environmental Protection Law stipulates that from 2024, manufacturers and importers will be responsible for collecting and recycling plastic waste. This will not only promote recycling but also open up great opportunities for the domestic recycling industry.

Vietnam also has great potential thanks to its abundant plastic scrap resources and its ability to invest in technology. Preferential policies on land, tax and investment capital are attracting more and more domestic and foreign enterprises to participate in this field.

Small actions have big value

In addition to the efforts of businesses, each individual also plays an important role in limiting plastic pollution. Seemingly small actions such as sorting waste at the source, reusing plastic bags or participating in community initiatives such as the “Exchange trash for gifts” program are gradually becoming indispensable factors in creating positive changes. When these habits are widely implemented, the collective strength will make a big difference, bringing us closer to the goal of building a healthy, sustainable society.

Journey to a sustainable future

Plastic recycling in Vietnam is not simply a short-term solution to the pollution problem, but more than that, it is also a door that opens many opportunities for sustainable development of both the community and businesses. This is a journey that requires the companionship and efforts of all stakeholders - the government with its coordinating role, businesses with their technological and creative strength, as well as people with their awareness and responsibility in their daily actions.

From implementing plastic waste recycling policies, developing advanced technologies, to raising public awareness, all contribute to creating the foundation for a sustainable ecosystem. With the initiatives and efforts being implemented, Vietnam has the opportunity to become one of the leading countries in handling plastic waste and developing a circular economy in the region. Collaborative projects between large enterprises such as Unilever, Coca-Cola and the government have shown the country's strong potential in this field. At the same time, the contribution of each individual is also an important factor to accelerate the transformation process.

From urban areas to remote rural areas, plastic recycling is spreading rapidly. It is the combination of big strategies and small changes that has created a sustainable movement that is helping the country not only solve the problem of pollution but also shape a green future for the next generation.

The journey to building a green Vietnam is not far away but needs to start with the smallest steps. From recycling yourself, changing your consumption habits, to promoting and encouraging your relatives and friends to participate in environmental protection initiatives, everyone can become an important factor in this change. When everyone joins hands, Vietnam can completely move closer to the goal of becoming a shining model in plastic waste treatment in the region and the world.
