Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common sexual disorder in men today, and is considered by experts as a "difficult to talk about disease" of men. Although the disease does not affect life, it greatly affects the quality of life and family happiness. Therefore, patients need to detect and confidently seek early examination and treatment.
Patients are getting younger and younger.
According to statistics from Binh Dan Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, in recent times, the number of patients coming for examination for erectile dysfunction accounts for about 30% of the total number of patients; of which, men under 40 years old suffering from this disease account for about 15%. Even many young people who have just started a family, between the ages of 20 and 30, are also suffering from erectile dysfunction.
A typical case is the case of patient TTP (29 years old, living in Dong Thap province) who recently visited the Andrology Department (Binh Dan Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City) in a state of "the top doesn't listen to the bottom" that has lasted for the past 2 years. "As a strong man, it is embarrassing to go see a doctor for this disease. But if you don't see a doctor and keep enduring it, it will get more and more tiring. No matter who you love, you don't dare to think about going further," Mr. P. sadly said.
As for Mr. HL (31 years old, living in Binh Tan district, Ho Chi Minh City), although he and his wife have been married for just over a month, every time "that thing" happens, he gets stressed and can't make his "little guy" do what he wants. Afraid that his family and friends will find out and lose face, Mr. HL went online to find out and bought medicine to take himself. However, after 2 weeks of taking medicine, spending more than 4 million VND, his "little guy" is still... the same. Both worried about wasting money and afraid of affecting his family's happiness, he went to the hospital for a check-up.
“I was given medical and psychological advice by a doctor. Although I love my wife very much, I get very stressed every time we have sex. The doctor said that the problem I am having is due to psychological factors, so I need to change and adjust,” said Mr. HL.
In addition to the majority of patients with RLC due to their physical and psychological conditions as above, there are many cases where the cause comes from lifestyle and environment. Recently, Binh Dan Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City received a 40-year-old man who had an erection for a week after drinking a tonic wine ordered online.

“Doctors at Binh Dan Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City performed emergency urology surgery and removed all the blood clots, but the patient’s penis collapsed. To restore normal function to this organ, the patient must have an artificial corpus cavernosum implanted. However, this is not a cheap surgery,” said Dr. Mai Ba Tien Dung (Head of the Department of Andrology, Binh Dan Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City).
Healthy lifestyle, stress relief
According to Dr. Mai Ba Tien Dung, there are many causes of RLC such as: congenital diseases, drug use habits, life pressure, exercise regimen, diet... In which, living habits such as eating, exercising, and lifestyle have a great influence on this disease.
“Lack of exercise and abuse of stimulants can easily lead to the situation of “the top doesn’t listen to the bottom”. Not only that, stress is also the culprit causing RLC. With today’s high-pressure modern life, young people have many things to worry about, so it is easy to get stressed and in the long run, get this disease without knowing it”, Dr. Mai Ba Tien Dung shared.
He said that the worrying thing is that nowadays, the situation of patients being afraid to go to the hospital for examination or buying medicine to treat themselves at home is quite common. Binh Dan Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City has also received many cases of self-treatment of RLC leading to complications, commonly prolonged erections and blood clots.
“The “golden time” for male urological emergencies is 6 hours. If left too long, the patient will experience many other dangerous complications,” noted Dr. Mai Ba Tien Dung.
To detect erectile dysfunction early, men need to take the initiative to have health check-ups, especially focusing on pre-marital health check-ups. During pre-marital health check-ups at the hospital, men are examined, consulted, tested for hormones, and have ultrasounds to examine the genitals, abnormal structures of the corpus cavernosum, abnormal structures of the testicles, and possible causes of erectile dysfunction.
From there, the doctor will advise and provide appropriate treatment. As for older men, if detected and treated at a reputable medical facility, the condition of RLC can be overcome and improved.
According to Dr. Mai Ba Tien Dung, up to 40% of men of retirement age still want and have the need for sex, but erectile dysfunction is a huge obstacle.
To treat this disease, doctors will conduct couples counseling, to examine the real sexual needs of both husband and wife. Treatment of erectile dysfunction should combine the art of communication and the art of counseling, and the use of medication, especially avoiding causing excessive expectations for the patient.
