On the occasion of Lunar New Year 2024, every day, the family of Mrs. Tran Thi Thanh (51 years old, residing in Binh village, Thach Hung commune) makes 30,000 to 50,000 rice paper rolls.
Ms. Thanh said that the demand for rice paper during Tet is very high, "as much as they make, they sell out". However, what makes Ms. Thanh and many families making rice paper unhappy is that the high price of rice means the profit is not high.
“Last year, the price of rice was 10,000 VND/kg, while the price of rice paper was 16,000 VND/100 pieces, but this year, the price of rice is 15,000 VND/kg, while the price of rice paper has only increased slightly to 18,000 VND/100 pieces,” Ms. Thanh shared.
In addition to the high price of rice, Ms. Thanh is also concerned that with the rapid urbanization, the space for drying rice paper is increasingly narrowing, causing people in the rice paper making village to worry about the future of this craft village.
Mr. Phan Van Vuong (65 years old) is drying rice paper for his daughter Phan Thi Oanh's rice paper production facility in Binh village, Thach Hung commune - sharing that his daughter's facility makes 60,000 rice papers every day.
The cake is made by machine, every sunny day it is made twice, once in the early morning, once around noon.
"The cakes cannot be made in time to supply the market during Tet, but the price of rice is too high so the profit is not as expected" - Mr. Vuong shared.
Mr. Vuong is also concerned that the space for drying cakes is gradually shrinking due to urbanization and construction of residential areas and houses.
According to the leader of Thach Hung Commune People's Committee, in recent years, many households in Binh village have invested in rice paper making machines to make large quantities and save manpower.
Although machine production is large, during Tet the market demand is high so farmers cannot produce enough to supply the market.
Currently, the entire Binh village has nearly 90 households producing rice paper, accounting for nearly 85% of the total households in the village, of which about 30 households use rice paper making machines. This craft village in Binh village creates jobs for more than 200 local workers.
According to the leader of Thach Hung commune, in the coming time, this commune will organize and rearrange the production of rice paper and traditional craft villages in the direction of forming value chains from raw material areas, production, to product consumption.
The commune also focuses on building production and business processes to ensure food safety and hygiene, environmental sanitation; moving towards building local OCOP products.
